Bear Trail
JBMS Newsletter - August 23, 2024
From the Desk of Mr. Yelvington
Bear Nation,
At some point in your Bear’s middle school years, they may come home with some information that causes you to pause. As you take in the information please consider that It is likely that they do not have all the information. They may have heard something that is not fully correct, or only heard one side of a story. When this is a classroom-related issue, I ask that you contact the teacher directly. When the information appears to be more school wide or outside the classroom, I encourage you to reach out to your Bear’s grade level counselor or administrator. The best way to receive accurate information is to contact us. We are here to help answer questions.
This week students received their IDs. The expectation is that students wear their IDs every day. They are not allowed to cover their picture up and must be able to show it to any staff member when asked to do so. IDs will be used to scan on and off the bus, in the lunch lines, and in the library to check out a book. The district will send out more information about the bus app and how to use it. My children use their IDs to scan on and off the bus. My wife loves it because she can see when the bus reaches the bus stop and knows when to expect my daughters at home. Please help us by making sure your child has their ID every day.
We are excited to invite you to our annual James Bowie Middle School Open House on Thursday, August 29th. Due to the large number of people attending, we will not have a general meeting in the commons. In your student’s first-period class at 5:30, I will broadcast my welcome to you over our TV announcement system. I would love to meet you in person, so I will be in the commons all evening ready to shake your hand.
Open House class visits will start promptly at 5:39. Parents will follow their student’s schedule, starting in 1st period. To help you navigate the evening take a picture of your child’s schedule and the room numbers. You may even want to borrow the map they used to get around during the first week of school. Your child is not required to attend, this is an evening for parents to remember what it was like to navigate a middle school building and see seven different teachers.
The evening will consist of an abbreviated class schedule, which will give you an opportunity to meet each of your child’s teachers. There will be time built in for a few parent questions, but we request that you not engage the teacher in a parent/teacher conference at this time. Parent/teacher conferences are an important part to building a strong relationship for the success of your child. Please arrange a time by calling the school or emailing the teacher directly. Thank you in advance for attending and I look forward to meeting you.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Yelvington

Whole Child Health Initiative
Dear Parents,
I want to draw your attention to the FBISD Whole Child Health Webpage. We include this in all of our newsletters but it can easily be overlooked. This page has many different resources for students and families to access. For example links to See Something Share Something, 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline which is for 24 hour/7 days a week immediate emotional support, and 211 Get connected with help for many other needs people may have. You will also find tabs that have resources for students and parents where information about talking to a counselor is recommended along with information about our mental health partners.
