Important Updates
First Week Update
Happy first week of school! We are very pleased with how our first week went this year! Our students and staff did a great job learning and practicing new procedures. We saw lots of polite and kind students working well together in class. We implemented new cafeteria procedures, reducing the amount of students eating in the cafeteria at one time. This has made a huge improvement in the cafeteria environment. We are on our way! Amplifying excellence every day!
Lockdown and Evacuation Drills
We will be conducting mandatory safety drills throughout the year based on guidance from the school division and state. Next week, on Monday, we will be conducting the lockdown drill. Any time we conduct the lockdown drill, we will be notifying parents in advance so there is no miscommunication on whether a situation at school is unsafe or just a drill. All staff are reviewing the purpose and procedures of all of our drills so students know what to do and why they are doing them.
PWCS Social-Emotional Needs Survey
PWCS is conducting the annual Social-Emotional Needs Assessment as school begins. The purpose of this assessment is to check on the students' well-being so we can provide additional support and services as needed. The needs assessment is organized and led by the school counseling team and is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Middle-level grades will complete this during their science classes. Elementary-level grades will complete this in their homeroom. Students who have opted out will be supported by the school counselors or other resource staff during the assessment. If you have any questions, please contact TNS Director of School Counseling, Mrs. Breski, at breskidm@pwcs.edu.

Vacancies Update
We have more updates this week again on hiring. We are fully staffed in all areas K-8 except the following:
- 6th Grade Science - We have a variety of substitutes in place for the sixth grade science vacancy. The sixth grade team and the science team are helping with lessons and materials. The position is posted online to hire.
- Technology Education - This program is meant to be a combination of tech and woodshop/manufacturing. We have posted this position online and it is part-time for us based on the amount of students who take this course. We had hired someone but it didn't work out, so the position is again vacant. We have hired Ms. Rock to fill in this week. We also have regular support in class and for planning with Doug Wright, a retired CTE Supervisor. This week, we had the CTE Director and staff come out to review our space and recommend improvements. They will be doing some serious work in the future to support us on this.
- Spanish - We had hired someone for this but that didn't work out either. We currently have a retired Spanish Teacher Ms. Ortiz in as long-term substitute until we can hire for this position. The position is posted and we may have some good leads on this to hire soon.
- Congratulations to TNS Counselor Clare Barclay-Shoeb who has accepted a promotion to central office Transition Coordinator! Positions like this in central office have a typically different and longer timeline for hire and it just happens to have gone through at the start of the year. We will now post a vacancy for middle school counselor. Since this is a move to central office, she will remain in her current position until we are able to hire for it on our end.
