Sailor Scoop - January 2025
Principals' Message
Hello VES Families,
It is hard to believe that we are into 2025 already. I blinked my eyes and we are already ending the second quarter. This time of year it is easy to want shut things down and hibernate a bit to avoid the colder, darker days. However, it is a very busy time at VES. The end of the semester is an opportunity to check in on our progress and look at how we are doing both on a day to day basis and towards our student growth from the start of the year to now. Over the next two weeks our students are working on NWEA MAP testing and Acadience Reading benchmarking for the mid year. This along with second quarter classroom grades coming out this later this week, means that there will be a lot of information and data coming your way very soon:
Friday, January 17th -
- Report Cards - k-3
- Progress reports if your students sees an intervention specialist.
- Progress reports if your student sees a reading specialist.
Friday, January 24 -
- NWEA MAP reports
- Acadience Reading Reports
- 3rd grade Fall State Test Reports
- Conference sign up sheet with online or paper sign up options (k-3)
Once you have all of this information we encourage you to sign up for our winter conferences that are held on February 11th and 13th. This is a great opportunity to come together as part of your child's educational team and discuss progress with his/her teachers.
New Curriculum for 2025!
The state of Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has chosen a list of approved curriculum for teaching reading moving forward. This list aligns with the science of reading and the good news is that we already use many of the reading materials on that list. Our reading series, Wonders is an older version and is not on the list. So we are tasked with selecting a core curriculum this year. Mr. Weaver, our Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum Director, has been working with a team of teachers and administrators from both VES and SMS to narrow down the choices. We now invite you to use the link or scan the QR code below to take a deeper look into the process and at the choices that are being considered. https://www.vermilionschools.org/Curriculum.aspx
Check out the flyer below!
Cold Weather Blues:
We have been stuck inside for recess for a few days now. We will continue to say inside if the weather is below 20 degrees with the windchill. Please make sure your child is dressed to go outside each day. If it is 20 degrees we will go outside and play. We are outside for 25 minutes and at that temperature they need to have coats, hats, and gloves. If your child is need of those items please reach out to our school counselor, Mrs. Austin.
Here is to a great start to 2025,
Matt Malear

PBIS Corner
Wow! We ended the first half of the year with 170 positive phone calls at VES! Hopefully we can double that in the second half! There is a potential for us to make positive contact with every family in our building! If you have been on the receiving end of those phone calls you know how great it feels when your student is celebrated whether it's for always going above and beyond or for the small wins! We want to focus on all of the many positive things that happen here at VES!
We are going to start something new in the new year to include families in this wonderful opportunity! Included is a link so that families have the chance to nominate staff members that make a positive impact on students! It can be anonymous or you can include your/your student's name. We will share the feedback and celebrate with our staff! Thank you for helping to make VES an even better place!
We recognize our students in various ways through positive referrals and citizen of the month! Congratulations to all the students who were celebrated through the first half of the school year!
We would love to seek feedback from our families to gather input and determine how we can best include families in PBIS. Please email me at brebman@vermilionschools.org if you would like your feedback and questions to be included in the process. Thank you!
