Hembree Springs Summer Scoop
Message from Ms. Lahey
Greetings Hembree Families,
I hope that your summer is off to a wonderful start. I have been preparing for the beginning of the school year already. I am so excited to start the year as your principal. I will send home bi-weekly communication over the summer to keep you informed about upcoming events. I will also share snapshots of our school procedures. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything. Stay safe and enjoy your time!
Important Tips for the School Year
Arrival/Dismissal:
We recommend that your child has consistent transportation. This is especially true for the first week of school. There are different routines and locations for each method of transportation. It is beneficial that if a student is going to normally be a bus rider, that he/she is a bus rider the first day. This is an opportunity to hear all the expectations from the bus driver day one. It is also helpful for learning that routine. Lastly, it is easier for the teacher to support and teach routines that first week if the routines are not changing for that child.
Transportation Changes:
All transportation changes must be received by 12:00 PM the day of the change. It takes time for us to process each request and notify the teacher. Also, our final check-out is 2:00 PM. Ms. Dee, front desk, will not allow any student to be checked out after 2:00 PM due to the importance of ensuring that dismissal practices are followed closely.
Clinic, Medication, and Student Injury
Most parents are not aware that Ms. Jean Bagwell, our clinic assistant, is not a licensed or registered nurse. She is an assistant that his been trained in basic first aid, AED use, diabetic support, and giving medications. Given that we do not have certified medical staff, the parent makes all decisions in regard to medical treatment of the child. If there is a life threatening event, the school will call 911 for emergency services and he/she may be transported by ambulance for medical treatment. For minor injuries, you will receive a clinic note from the school in the child's backpack. For any head injury, possible bone break or soft tissue tears, or any other severe injury, the parents will receive a phone call immediately from clinic staff.
Discipline and PBIS:
This year we will continue the wonderful PBIS initiatives we already have in place. Our students will be grouped into one of four nests. Each homeroom will be assigned a nest. We will calculate the number of tickets received by each nest on a weekly basis. At the end of each 9 weeks, the nest with the most tickets will have an extra treat/surprise/activity. We will continue with paper tickets. Our students will be able to shop the PBIS store to cash in their tickets. Our teachers allow students to save up for bigger prizes, and in true teacher form use this as a life lesson for goal setting, saving, and spending. Throughout the year we will highlight more about our PBIS system and how you can get involved in this as well!
Have a wonderful weekend!
