Toes in the Toe fun!
The 5th grade classes had loads of fun over the past 2 days at Patience Park Campground. Students learned about animals and plant life whose habitat is the Toe River. A big Thank You to Mrs. Tressa Hartsell, her students and the volunteers for making this awesome educational opportunity available for our students.

Shout out to Mrs. Kim Silver’s Entrepreneurship II class! Some of those students participated in the 2nd Annual Lion’s Den Business Pitch Competition on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Mars Hill University.
Lacie Weatherman and Andie Barefoot placed 3rd, earning a $500 cash prize for the team & $250 for the Entrepreneurship class.
Ava Gillespie, Abby Smith, and Jennifer Rojas placed 2nd, earning a $1,000 cash prize for the team & $500 for the Entrepreneurship class.

Join the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) for an exclusive evening for 3rd – 5th grade public school educators at Vance Birthplace Historic Site! Attending educators will receive a private tour of this 1800s historic property, which provides unique opportunities to engage students in exploring aspects of our shared past, including an age-appropriate understanding of the complexities of slavery and the resilience and resistance of enslaved people. We will discuss the ways our team is ready to support your important work in the classroom, including sharing field trip activities we can lead and tailor for visiting school groups. We'll also provide time for teachers, as experts from the field, to share feedback, ideas and requests regarding what else you would like our site to offer to support classroom learning. Attendees will also receive breaking news regarding a new DNCR field trip funding program launching this fall!
Attending educators will also receive:
- A $50 stipend (stipends will arrive via direct deposit 6-8 weeks post-event)
- Dinner
- .3 CEUs
- Teaching resources
- The chance to network with other educators from multiple schools and districts, as well as the opportunity to engage with DNCR/Historic Sites staff ready to serve as a source of support for your important work in the classroom!
