This Month in Grade 1&2
So far this month the grade 1&2's have been working on establishing classroom routines that support independent learning, effective communication and critical thinking. Through guided practice students are able to read to self for 20 minutes independently, write small moment scenes which include setting, action, thoughts and feelings, and dialogue. This week students will finalize their Most Magnificent Thing Project, which is intended to guide students through the critical thinking process. This will be our framework for building projects throughout the year in all subject areas.
To date we have worked on the following concepts in each subject area:
Reading
- Building reading stamina and fluency
- Reviewing vowel team sounds
- Learning decoding strategies
- Choosing ideas to write about
- Selecting interesting words
- Explaining ideas with details
- Measurement - length, learning how read a ruler and tape measure
- Measurement vocabulary
- Addition strategies, such as doubles, counting on, tally marks and ten and twenty frames
- Identify the structures of a seed
- How to write like a scientist
- Critical thinking (Most Magnificent Thing Project), analyse, question and develop
Students work on French language project in maker space.
Math doubles plus one hands on activity.
Grade 1&2's getting to know the NYA community.

- Maintaining reading stamina
- Guided practice learning routines for independent rotation through Meet With Teacher, Read to Self, and Read to Someone
- Guided reading with levelled reading groups
- Development of comprehension skills
- Organizing own writing with a clear beginning, middle and end
- Develop efficient strategies for subtraction
- Understanding vocabulary for addition and subtraction operations
- Investigate different environments that support different types of plants and animals
