Third-graders building structures and friendships
A Note From Mrs. Shaw...
Dear Abraham Lincoln Families,
It has been such a strong start to our school year. Thank you for all of your communication and commitment to partnering with your child's teacher to set your student off on the right foot.
Students at Abraham Lincoln School have been learning all about our school-wide expectations:
Ready to Learn, Ambitious, Mindful, and Safe. Students have been earning RAM Awards for demonstrating expected behaviors. Classroom routines and procedures are being taught and practiced while relationships between peers and students and staff are being established. It is a very exciting time of the year.
During the upcoming weeks, classroom teachers will continue to administer beginning of the year academic assessments in order to determine precisely where each student's strengths and needs lie. Instruction will be designed for each student accordingly. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held in person on Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26. During the conferences families and teachers will have an opportunity to share about progress and goals for the upcoming year. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your student's teacher.
I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year with you all. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions at any time.
Best,
Shannon Shaw, Principal

FREE VEGGIES FROM OUR SCHOOL GARDEN
Our first session of Garden Club was held on Thursday. Third grade students worked together to harvest the vegetables that they planted as second graders last spring. A "Free Veggie" table was set up in the lobby to share the bounty with the entire school community. Our students were ecstatic to choose vegetables to take home and share with their families.

Abe Lincoln Students Will Be Busy as Bees Painting a New Pollinator Garden Mural
Bangor Beautiful, a non-profit founded in 2022 to create and cultivate projects to beautify Bangor, Maine, has commissioned local artist, Peter Walls to create a mural to help bring public art and education about the importance of nature and pollinators to local schools, beginning with Abraham Lincoln School. Walls will collaborate with teachers and students to paint the public facing mural.
Bangor Beautiful President, Annette Dodd, and local artist Peter Walls created a video for students explaining murals and pollinators that was shown this past spring. Students then created dozens of images depicting the many parts of a pollinator garden that Peter Walls has assembled into a design (see below) that will be outlined for students to fill in with paint.. During the week of September 23-27 students will participate in the painting of the large panels for the mural. Installation will be the end of September.
Bangor Beautiful has been collaborating with art teacher, Mrs. Crahen, on this project that will intersect with our school’s successful garden program. This fall, our school will also see the planting of a fruit orchard by ReTreeUS and the planting of a pollinator garden near Chapin Park by Bangor Beautiful’s Trees & Bees Committee.
We are thrilled to partner with Bangor Beautiful and local artist Peter Walls on this exciting mural project. This collaboration not only beautifies our school but also deepens our students' understanding of the vital role that pollinators play in our ecosystem. It's a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage creatively while learning about nature, and we can't wait to see their artwork come to life for the entire community.

Third graders studied Vincent van Gogh's painting called, Still-life, Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers, 1888. In this project, students learned about the artist Vincent van Gogh and his style of painting (Post-Impressionism.) They created their own impressionistic work using tempera paint, and learned the anatomy of flowers. They also learned about relationships between line, shape, color, space, value, and proportion in their design.
**REMEMBER WATER BOTTLES**
A reminder for students to bring their water bottles to school every day. Hydration is crucial for their well-being and concentration in the classroom.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students refreshed throughout the day.
**We are graciously accepting donations of small paper or plastic cups for students to use to access water when they forget to bring their water bottles to school. THANK YOU!!**
