Belmont Elementary: A PAWSitive Place to Learn!
Bulldogs on the Move Learning about how to BE the CAUSE of Something Positive!
You may have heard that our Bulldogs were on the move Monday afternoon as they participated in the first Character Pack of the year! We have twenty-six packs, A-Z, led by Belmont Team Members. Every student in the school is assigned to a pack, comprised of fourteen - fifteen total students spanning all six grade levels. Students stay in their packs for the entirety of their time here at Belmont to build caring relationships with another adult and student friendships across the building. Our 5th graders are always so excited to serve as guides for the Kindergarten and 1st graders in their packs. They really help to make the magic work within about a forty minute timeframe.
Once in their packs, students participate in a short opening chat, engage with a story chosen to teach a particular social skill for character development, and then usually complete a short activity that gets turned into a full-school bulletin board in the main hall to help remind us of our time together. When you're here for conferences, check out the Character Pack board in the main hallway.
Today, we kicked off our year with a book and a challenge, and because I couldn't find a book that said just what I wanted it to say, I wrote one. BE the CAUSE of Something Positive, complete with stick figure illustrations, provided the foundation we needed for the year. The challenge was to all students that if I could write a book, and not worry about how simple the illustrations were, then I was SURE that they could also write and illustrate books. We plan to create a special section in our library to display our student authors' work. Our Bulldogs are specifically challenged to write stories about people who are the CAUSE of Something Positive. BEing the CAUSE means to BE Caring, Aware, Uplifting, Strong and Energized. We focused on CARING this week, and will explore each of the other behaviors this year in our Character Packs.
Until our next pack, we're working together to choose caring actions that become habits, that become who we are as awesome humans. Together, we're determined to make a difference at Belmont and beyond!
Go Gold for Children's Cancer Awareness Month
Please send your Bulldogs to school wearing yellow or gold on Tuesday to help us recognize Children's Cancer Month. Several Belmont Bulldogs have already battled and beaten cancer during their childhood. We are happy to help raise awareness so that just maybe we can be one day closer to a cure for our sweet warriors. We are not hosting a specific fundraiser, just raising recognition through our go gold day. If you have the heart or ability, you may consider reaching out to Children's Mercy Hospital or St. Jude's with your support.
Additionally, in support of out of town families supporting children battling significant illness at Children's Mercy, the Ronald McDonald House provides room and board in a comfortable setting with family support during difficult times. At Belmont, we collect pop-tabs all year long which are donated to our local Ronald McDonald House.
Our humble requests are to see our school (and maybe even every parent in the loop) sporting gold (or yellow) on Tuesday, and for you to save your pop-tabs for us! Send those in anytime.
Within our walls, we just may have the future doctor who will find the cure. Until then, let's raise awareness to pave the way toward that beautiful day when no child or family needs suffer from childhood cancer.
The Book Fair is Coming to Belmont During Conferences
Our Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the library during conferences for your browsing pleasure! Students will get a virtual sneak peak during the last rotation of classes before conferences. This is a great time to get something new to read in the paws of every Bulldog!

Wednesday, September 25, 4:45pm - 8:15pm
Thursday, September 26, 10:00am - 2:00pm and 3:00pm - 8:00pm.

On our Book Fair Homepage, scroll down to find the eWallet information. This is a way to easily set up an account for your child on which funds can be added for shopping our cashless book fair. This might come in handy in the event that someone other than you is bringing your child to our event.
Because often, families like to surprise a teacher with a new book, we've created eWallet accounts for each teacher that can be accessed when you visit the Book Fair. If you need a particular link before then, please email me at phargrove@usd232.org and I can help you with that!
