SUMMER BREAK: What to expect?
Summer time in the United States starts in May and ends in August.
SUMMER BREAK in the United States is when schools close (usually in May or June) for a long break, until they open again in either August or September.
Global Academy Students will come back to school on August 25, 2025.
What are some things that happen during the summer?
People like to get together as family and friends.
Cookouts are a popular social gathering where food is cooked on a grill outdoors. You can see this at people's homes and also at public parks.
Some holidays during the summer months are:
Juneteenth which is June 19th.
July 4th. You might hear fireworks in the days leading up to this day, and many more on the actual day.
WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?
June 19th = Juneteenth
- The word Juneteenth is a combination of June and nineteen.
- On June 19th, 1865, the last enslaved people were made aware that slavery was over and that they were free.
- Black Americans celebrate this day as the day their ancestors were freed from slavery.
- In the United States slavery became illegal in 1863.
- Unfortunately, it took TWO YEARS for the news to reach all enslaved people.
- But when it did, the date was June 19th, 1865 and that is why we celebrate this day as Freedom Day!
This is the official Juneteenth Flag

APPLY NOW for SUMMER EBT
What is Summer EBT?
Summer EBT/SUN Bucks provides grocery benefits to low-income families with school-aged children when schools are closed for the summer. Summer EBT benefits will either be loaded to a household’s Ohio Direction Card, or a benefit card will be sent in the mail to each eligible child. Families can use the money to buy food during the summer at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers. Families will receive a one-time benefit of $120 for each eligible child and participation will not affect children or families’ immigration status.
How do I know if my child is eligible to receive Summer EBT/Sun Bucks and how do I apply?
Many families will get Summer EBT/SUN Bucks automatically if they are getting other benefits, but some families may need to apply for the program. If your household already participates in SNAP, OWF, or if income eligible and receiving Medicaid benefits, your child will automatically be enrolled to receive summer benefits. You do not need to fill out an application or take any further action. Similarly, households who have been approved for free/reduced meal benefits at their school will be submitted to automatically receive the summer benefit with no further action.
If you are not automatically enrolled, but you believe that your child might be eligible, there is an online application available at sebt.ohio.gov for households to apply for Summer EBT/SUN Bucks directly. When applying, you will be asked to provide your child’s name, school, date of birth, address, and some additional details. You will also be asked to report your household’s income. You will not need to provide any other documents or information including social security number, proof of citizenship, or pay stubs to apply.

WHEN DO STUDENTS RETURN TO SCHOOL?

UNDERSTANDING SCHOOL CULTURE IN THE UNITED STATES
Understanding School in the United States (credit to Dublin City Schools)
Attendance
In U.S. schools, being on time for school and having good attendance is valued and expected. It is important that students attend each day to get the most out of their education. When a student misses a school day, the parent has to call the school to let them know of the absence. When the student returns to school, they must also bring a note signed by the parent explaining the absence.
Attention to Time
If you would like to speak with a teacher or principal at the school about your child, it is important to call ahead and make an appointment. Teachers and principals are happy to meet with parents/guardians but they cannot be pulled away from the children to do so. When making an appointment with someone in the school, it is important to be on time.
Collaboration
Collaboration is a very strong cultural value in U.S. schools. Classrooms are centered around the students, and you will see many students working together in groups. All students are expected to participate in group projects and to do their equal share of the work.
Directness and Openness
Students are encouraged to say exactly what they think during class discussions. In some cultures it may be considered rude to disagree or question a teacher. However, teachers encourage students to think, ask, and state their opinions in respectful ways.
Discipline
Student's handbooks outline the expectations for behavior in each school. If a student breaks a rule in the student handbook, the parent will be notified and discipline such as detention, suspension, or expulsion could result.
Dress-code
Newcomers to the U.S. are often shocked by the informality of Americans. People dress very casually at school. To view the dress-code, please refer to the student handbooks: https://www.ccsoh.us/Page/2411
Independence
Independence is a very strong cultural value in U.S. schools and households. Teachers and parents believe teaching their child independence is an important part of their upbringing and is a positive thing.
Self-Sufficiency
In the schools, it is expected that the students practice self-sufficiency. If students need to use the restroom, or need a supply to complete school work, they will need to ask the teacher. It will rarely be assumed that a student needs help if they don’t ask for it.
Participation
U.S. schools encourage parent participation at school events or activities. Teachers and principals value discussing the academic progress of the student with the parents at parent teacher conferences. U.S. schools believe that students receive a better education when school staff and parents work together to educate the children.
