It's a Great Day to be a Fighting Zebra!
Hello Zebras and Zebra Families!
It's hard to believe, but we are getting geared up for the 2024-25 school year. I absolutely speak on behalf of our staffulty (staff & faculty) team when I tell you that we are excited to welcome our Zoo back to campus! In addition to our returning students, we look forward to meeting our Frosh and other new students as we work to build a community focused on learning and college and career readiness while we embrace our core values of character, care, connection and courage.
New Student Orientation is on Wednesday, August 7th from 9am-12pm and the first day of school is Thursday, August 15th. On the first day of school, we'll start in class at 8:30am (period 1) and then gather for a welcome assembly. School will be dismissed at 3:30pm.
Please read on for important information about:
- orientation (incoming Frosh and new students only!)
- school photos
- schedule and material pick up
- fun activities happening the first weeks of school
- how to get connected to LHS via the internet and social media
- and more...I'll add information to this newsletter as details are finalized!
Please take a minute to put items in your family calendar so that your student has the opportunity to feel ready to start the new school year on the right foot!
If your student is a Class of 2025 Senior, please be sure to schedule your senior portraits over the summer at: https://billsmithphoto.com/lincoln/.
Our office reopens on Tuesday, August 6th, but if you need anything in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact the District Office (Monday-Friday from 10am-2pm / 916 645 6350) or reach out to me directly (jhladun@wpusd.org / 702 324 6884 - text if it's an emergency) and I'll help connect you with the right person!

Top Eight Things to Know!
added #7 (about SmartPasses) and #8 (Amazon Wish List!) on 8/13/24
...Cell Phone Policy
From our Handbook (linked here). Cell phones:
Can be used before and after school, between classes and during lunch time.
Cannot be used without teacher’s permission for any reason during class time.
Phones are to be inaccessible during class time.
When students use a Smart Pass to leave the classroom to use the restroom, cell phones must be left in the classroom.
Should a student’s cell phone be out during class time, the teacher may take it and deliver it to the office later in the day.
Should a student be seen using a cell phone outside of class during class time, the phone may be taken to the office.
When do the offending students get their phone back?
First Offense: Logged and the student may pick up the phone in the office after school.
Second Offense: Logged and the guardian must pick up the phone in the office.
Third Offense: Student receives detention. The incident is logged and the guardian must pick up the phone in the office.
Fourth Offense: Student receives a Saturday school/extended detention. Junior and seniors will lose their lunch pass privileges. The incident is logged and the guardian must pick up the phone in the office.
Parents who have a true emergency and must contact their students are to call the office at 916-645-6360, and a message will be delivered to the student immediately.
It is advised that students do not bring electronic devices on campus. The school does not assume responsibility for lost, stolen, or broken electronic devices.
...SmartPasses
SmartPasses are digital hall passes that will be used for restroom access, to check out chromebooks from a teacher, to access instruction spaces during intervention, and for access to special events. Essentially, if a student is leaving the classroom or is borrowing a chromebook, they'll use a SmartPass. In addition, student’s digital IDs will be housed in SmartPass.
SmartPass is linked through a district student portal called Clever, and students log in with their WPUSD email/password. SmartPass can be accessed via smartpass.app and does not require the download of an external app. SmartPasses are not accessible from cell phones during the school day, but they can be created from a student’s chromebook. Digital IDs are available through SmartPass on cell phones anytime.
Students will ask their teacher before leaving the room (like normal), and then generate a SmartPass instead of a paper/pencil pass. When they return to class, they will 'end' the pass. A reminder that because we do not allow cell phones in classrooms, SmartPasses will NOT work on cell phones and can only be generated from a chromebook or computer.
If a student is using excessive numbers of passes, is gone for excessive amounts of time, or is borrowing a chromebook regularly (all students should have/bring their chromebook daily), our admin team will keep the family apprised so we can work on solutions to keep students in class and learning.
We created a video to help students get familiar with SmartPass. We have used this system in the past, so it should be familiar to most students already. We encourage students to check out the video as they prepare to return to school: link here.

...Schedules
Schedules will be visible on Monday but they will NOT be finalized until Wednesday. Please be sure to login to PowerSchool, Schoology or Clever to view classes on Wednesday. Note that there are NO schedule changes until Monday, unless there is an error or you are missing a core class.

- outside of the attendance window / Wednesday / 4-8pm
Maps and the odd/even calendar are available here!
***Note that Technology was funky this week and not everyone was able to see their schedule on Monday and Tuesday. We are so sorry for any stress this created, but it was totally out of our hands as a school site. We are hopeful that things will be sorted by Wednesday! If you are getting emails from us, it's 99.9% certain that you have a schedule! Schedules should be visible online on Wednesday, and you can pick up a schedule from 8am-4pm from the office or from 4pm-8pm outside by the attendance window!***
(updated 8/13/24)
...Attendance
Positive attendance is critical for student success. In addition, Lincoln is a closed campus with the exception of juniors and seniors who have unscheduled/work experience course and/or approved off campus lunch passes. Please review these sections of our handbook for specific information about attendance, tardies, cuts, and check out procedures.
- General attendance policies (including excused v. unexcused) and how we support positive attendance - starts on page 27
- Check out procedures - starts on page 33
- Tardies & Tardy Sweeps - starts on page 46
...Bell Schedules

...Funding Formula Forms
This paperwork is part of your fall registration packet in PowerSchool. This form is critical for LHS. These forms used to determine if you got a reduced price on breakfast or lunch. Now, Breakfast and Lunch are free for all students daily, but these form (Universal Free Meals and Funding Formula) helps LHS specifically access additional funding - potentially up to $100,000!
These additional funds help us support our students in the classroom effectively. These funds are used to provide field trips, offset field trip costs, reduce costs associated with AP exams, provide reduced prices access everything from sports to yearbooks for to students who may have a particular financial need, provide training for our staff, and to pay our students to help support our students both in the classroom and during tutoring.
We will always put our students needs first, so we ask that you complete the Universal Meals and Funding Formula Forms in PowerSchool so we can continue to support our students without having to cut back spending on other areas of campus.
Directions on how to find/complete this form are available in an email the district sent on 8/1 at 3pm via Parent Square.

...ID Cards
If a student does NOT have their own smartphone or prefers a print ID, we will print you a physical ID at no cost.
We are excited to be more Earth conscious and to remove the issues for students that pop up when students forget their card...and it will allow us to keep card-based privileges up to date (i.e. for off-campus lunch access).
Here are a few FAQs:
1. Is this a new system? In the past, we've used Bill Smith's high5 ID system for digital ID cards, but we are planning to switch to use SmartPass in the 24/25 year for digital IDs to make them more accessible for students. So digital IDs aren't new, but this system is different than what we've used since fall 2022.
2. Why make the switch? SmartPass is already used for other tools (i.e. passes to classrooms and restrooms, intervention, and special events). Using SmartPass IDs reduces the number of systems we have to use, teach, and support. Plus we had issues last year with access to High5 IDs because they were on a separate website...we think these will be more accessible for students in the moment, and reduce frustration with accessing their digital ID quickly.
3. How does SmartPass work with the WPUSD technology department? SmartPass is integrated into our district's tech digital systems already (so we don't send student data anywhere to generate our digital ID's). We've been using the SmartPass tools at LHS and TBHS since the fall of 2023. You can learn more about SmartPass's ID system here.
4. What is directory information and how is it shared? We (all schools in WPUSD, and most schools across the country) provide directory information to our school photographers annually, and guardians give permission for us to do so in the district's annual notification process. More information is available on the WPUSD website here and on the US Department of Education website here.
5. I prefer a print ID. No problem, we'll be able to accommodate students who prefer a print ID, but you may need to be patient for a few days while we get them printed/distributed after picture day.
School Schedules!
...Schedule Pick Up
Digital Schedules:
We encourage students to get their schedule ONLINE - Schedules will be visible in PowerSchool and Clever starting in mid August (when the district activates that view for families/students). However, schedules will be NOT BE FINALIZED until Wednesday, 8/14 at 8am.
We STRONGLY encourage you to check your schedule again on Wednesday 8/14 after 8am. We will continue to make schedule changes until the end of the day on 8/13. We want you to know what to expect on Thursday and Friday!
How to get a paper schedule:
If you would like to pick up a paper schedule, come by the office as of Wednesday, 8/14 after 9am. Note that any schedules you may see online before Wednesday, 8/14 are subject to change (and likely will!)
Schedule Changes:
No schedule changes will be considered until Mon., 8/19. On 8/19, QR codes will be posted around the office allowing students to make schedule change requests.
The only time we make changes the first week of school is if there is an error (i.e. you are missing a class or you are enrolled in a class you should not be in [i.e. English 9 as a junior]).
Reminder: you may be able to see portions of your schedule before we distribute schedules on Wednesday, 8/14. Please know that schedules are NOT finalized until 8am on 8/14, so anything you may see on 8/13 or earlier may not be accurate and may not be honored.
Picking up other materials:
- Students will get textbooks from the library during class time.
- Students who have not been issued a chromebook will also be able to get one from the library on 8/14 OR during intervention in the first week of school
- PE Clothes will be purchased at orientation on 8/7 or from the PE teachers the first week of school (with cash or check [payable to Lincoln High School]). PE Clothes can also be purchased online at our Student Body Store and picked up at orientation or in the first week of school - click here!
...Bell Schedules
The basic schedule:
- Monday: 8:30am - 2:30 pm
- Tuesday-Friday: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Keep in mind that students take 8 classes at a time, but they take 4 each day. "Odd" days are periods 1, 3, 5 and 7. "Even" days are periods 2, 4, 6 and 8.
We serve breakfast and lunch daily (more details below). Meals are free for all students.
For all the bell schedule details (period start/end times and the odd/even calendar), click here!
...Textbooks Pick Up
Students will pick up any textbooks needed for their classes once school starts.
...Chromebooks
If you are NEW to WPUSD, you'll need to check out a chromebook and charger. You can do so at the LHS library on Wednesday, 8/14 from 9am-3pm. If you cannot come by on 8/14, please be sure to stop into the library on the first day of school to check out a device. You will need it EVERY day for instruction!
ALL students...a reminder that your chromebook should be brought to school daily and it should be charged. Students are responsible for their device; if a student damages or misplaces their device, they will be sent a bill for repair/replacement by our district office. If something happens to your chromebook that we not the fault of the student (i.e. it was broken or taken by a peer), you MUST inform the library or office within 48 hours. We always do our best to try to investigate/recover the device as long as we are told within 48 hours.
NEW this year - the district if offering a chromebook service plan for $40. More information about this plan and the district chromebook device agreement are available here.
To Dos for our Parents & Guardians!
...Parent/Student Handbook
Each year, we update our handbook to reflect current policies, procedures, and practices that guide our work with students. Please be sure to review this with your student. In the first days of school, we will meet with all students to go over the highlights of the handbook, and we'll share those slides online for your review as well. The handbook is broken into five main categories of information:
- General Information and School Services
- Academics and Counseling
- Activities and Athletics
- Campus Rules and Policies
- WPUSD Discipline Guidelines for Secondary Schools
You can find the handbook at lhs.wpusd.org > Our School > Student Handbook or access it directly here. (added 8/5/24)

...Vehicle Congestion Around Campus
Please be mindful of the new stop sign installed at 5th and J Streets. This is a busy intersection, and we want to be sure our community, our families, and our students are safe as people become familiar with the new rules of the road in that area around campus.
Please note that if you are dropping your student off around campus, it can be congested. This map may be helpful as you look for areas for easier drop off/pick up.
The main lot off of J Street & 8th is our primary parking lot. Students and visitors are welcome to park there. Students who park in that lot should have a parking permit (see Mrs. O'Dell in the office!). If you park on any side streets, even if they are adjacent to campus, know that is managed by LPD. We ask all of our students and visitors to be mindful and respectful of our neighbors by avoiding blocking driveways. (added 8/1/24)
...Parent Involvement Is Critical and Valued
Your voice as a parent/guardian of a Zebra is critical every year, but this year in particular! We will be examining the Youth Truth survey data (taken in April 2024), planning for our status as a Title I School, developing our Site Plan for Student Achievement, revising School Safety Plan, and engaging in our WASC mid-cycle visit. We want your input every year, but this year in particular, as these systems those require us to purposefully seek parent input and guidance.
We invite your participation in any number of parent committees. Let us know you are interested using this form and we'll be in touch as meetings are calendared.
We also host a Zebra Congress to collect input from our students (grades 9-12) throughout the year. Your voices matter! This is YOUR school!
...Parent Involvement Through Boosters
Just for Juniors and Seniors!
...Campus Parking Permits
Having permits will help us to more quickly identify the owner of a vehicle that:
- may not belong on campus
- has been involved in a vehicle accident/incident
- is parked in a restricted area (fire lane, staff parking, double parked, etc...).
To get a permit, students need to:
1. purchase a permit ($5 on our student store - cost is to cover cost of the permit) - click here
2. fill out a registration form online - click here!
3. upload their license, registration and insurance information to the form (in step 2)
4. stop by Mrs. O'Dell's desk to pick up their sticker & affix it to their windshield
There are a limited number of senior spots that are distributed through a raffle in the spring. The spots are painted and are not available for student parking (aside from the senior!) during school hours. Note that reserved spots include the parking permit cost!
...Off Campus Lunch Privilege
To apply for an "off campus lunch pass" you must:
1. complete this form - click here
2a. print the form and bring it to Mrs. Pineschi in the office or
2b. email the form (completed with Kami or other PDF writing tool) to Mrs. O'Dell (modell@wpusd.org) in the office...if you email it, you need to check in with her in person to be sure she has received it
How you will receive your off campus lunch pass:
Off campus lunch passes will be notated on your digital ID once your pass has been approved by our admin team (this may take several days). Students will not be allowed to leave campus until they can show their digital off-campus lunch pass approval. If a student is using a printed ID card, we will need to consult with the office to ensure their off-campus pass is currently valid, and so there may be a delay in departure.
Eligibility criteria:
1. Yearly written permission from the parent on file in the office. Students found to have forged signatures of a parent will have the privilege revoked for the remainder of the school year.
2. Students must do ONE of the following:
- Earn a 2.5 GPA with no grades of “F’s” or “NP’s” or
- Be on track for A-G completion (as approved by Assistant Principal) or
- Earn a “3/Standard Met” or “4/Standard Exceeded” on both the English/Language Arts and Math portions of the CAASPP exams (for incoming seniors only)
The off campus privilege may be forfeited at any time for any of the following:
1. Students suspended from school
2. Parent revokes the pass
3. Student attempts to take a non-privileged student off campus
4. Student’s GPA drops below a 2.5 GPA (may be reissued at next grading period if grades are at or above a 2.5 GPA)
5. Excessive tardies and/or absences (see cut/tardy policies)

...Athletics Participation
Student Athlete Participation Forms
We are very excited to announce that the Lincoln High School’s Athletic Department has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service. FinalForms allows you to complete and sign athletic participation forms for your students. The most exciting news is that FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice! FinalForms also pre-populates information wherever possible, for each of your students, saving you time. ALL PAPERWORK MUST BE RESIGNED YEARLY AND PHYSICAL FORMS ARE ONLY VALID FOR ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THE DOCTOR'S SIGNATURE/VISIT.
You may review your data at any time to verify it is current. You will be required to sign your forms once per year and after any update.
Click on the Parent Playbook (click here: https://bit.ly/FFParentPlaybook) to get started in FinalForms. If you require any support during the process, scroll to the page bottom and click “Use Support”.
We are asking that ALL parents of athletes use FinalForms.
Please register at: https://westernplacer-ca.finalforms.com/ and follow the prompts to create your account, create your students and sign your forms.
Thank you for your assistance in streamlining our paperwork processes at Lincoln High School.
