'Everyone knows what it is to hope.' - Pope Francis
Kia ora e te whānau,
Welcome back! We're stoked to have everyone back and we're into the swing of things again, in fact it feels like we haven't even been away. I hope you all enjoyed a fantastic summer break and your 2025 has started well.
This year the Catholic Church celebrates a special Jubilee Year - a centuries-old tradition rich with spiritual significance. This special time is dedicated to promoting renewal, spiritual growth, mercy, and forgiveness. This comes about every 25 years and the theme chosen by Pope Francis this year is 'Pilgrims of Hope'. 'Pilgrims of Hope' will also be our theme for our 2025 school year.
In the words of Pope Francis: 'Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope.'
As you know, 'Hope' is one of our school values taken from the Gospel and words of our Foundress, Mother Catherine McAuley which fits nicely with this years Jubilee theme. Even better than that, our values of 'Love' and 'Faith' also fit beautifully with the Pope's chosen theme.
Faith - 'Put your whole confidence in God'
Hope - 'Good today, better tomorrow'
Love - 'We belong to God, all in us is His'
As pilgrims of hope we recognise that life has its ups and downs, its challenges and joys. We know we will experience a variety of adventures with each other and with our students this year! We HOPE to guide our children to look at challenges in a new light.
As this new school year begins, we HOPE to rediscover the value of silence, effort and the simple things in life. We want to be true pilgrims of HOPE who journey together, supporting and encouraging each other in the smallest of ways.
Our world is filled with so many resources and the goods of the Earth have been gifted for everyone, not just a chosen few. We HOPE to recognise the needs of others, be it physical, emotional, social or spiritual. We HOPE to have strength and belief in ourselves to answer the call to reach out to these people.
HOPE can give us inward direction and true purpose to our lives. We HOPE to anchor ourselves in this, to lead HOPE filled lives, to be influenced by HOPE in our beliefs and our relationships, in order to feel stable and secure, anchored to God, ourselves and each other. We HOPE to live our lives to the fullest.
We HOPE for the 2025 school year to be one of faith, hope and love where our tamariki deepen their relationship with God and each other and flourish academically, spiritually, and socially.
Ma te Atua e manaaki - God bless,
Mallory

Nau Mai, Haere Mai - Welcome!
We are stoked to welcome the children below to St Mary's School for 2025 ...
First up we welcome Declan Muller to Room Pūkeko and St Mary's School. Declan is the youngest of Ninette and Andre's 3 boys and his big brother Reagan is doing a fantastic job of looking after him. Happy school days, Declan. We hope you have a great time here.
We also welcome Isabel Allen to Room Pūkeko and St Mary's School. Isabel is also the youngest in her family, we welcomed her big brother Caleb (who is also doing a great job of looking out for his wee sister) and mum and dad, Zoe and Travis to our community last year. We hope you love your time here at St Mary's, Isabel. Happy school days!
Phoebe Muir started smack bang at the end of last year so we're welcoming her again. Phoebe is the youngest of Shelley and Andrew and she joins her big sister, Ayla here. Phoebe impressed us so much at the end of 2024 that we whipped her straight into Mrs Butterfield's class - she's all over it! Happy school days, Phoebe!
New to Room Pīwakawaka and St Mary's School is James Reyes. James comes to us from Riversdale school and he already knows lots of kids here! We also welcome James' mum and dad, Marvelous and Wilde to our St Mary's School community. We're so happy to have you join us.
We welcome Narlah Gnys to Room Moa and St Mary's School. Narlah has come to us from Mataura School and is the youngest of Alexy and Jimmy-Joe Elers, who we also welcome to our St Mary's School community. We hope you enjoy your time with us Narlah.
Narlah's big brother, Dayton joins Miss McRae and Room Rūrū for 2025. Dayton is a year 6 leader and comes to us from Mataura School. We're stoked to have you here, Dayton and we hope you enjoy your time at our place.
Also joining Room Rūrū, we welcome Olivia Scheepers who has come to us from Ashburton. We also welcome her mum and dad, Nicolette and Willie Scheepers to our St Mary's School community. It's great to have you all here. We hope you have a great time here.
We also have a new set of year 6 twins who have started this week, Maria and Joyce. Maria joins Room Takahē and Joyce joins Room Kiwi. They are the daughters of Sarah and John Roxas who have come down from Auckland. They were too quick for us to get a photo of so I'll put one in next weeks newsletter. Welcome team, we're stoked to have you here with us.
New Staff
This week we also welcome two new staff. We are very happy to have Miss Emily Fricker joining us as a year 1 teacher in Room Tuī. What a lucky bunch of tamariki they are to be having you as one of their first teachers, Emily.
We also welcome Mrs Mandy Pearce as our Learning Support Coordinator while Mrs Sanson is on leave this year. Mandy has lots of teaching experience and is super keen to get to know our kids - it's a win, win!
Read more about Mandy below ...
Kia ora, I am thrilled to introduce myself as Mandy Pearce, your Learning Support Coordinator for 2025. I have lived in the Gore district with my husband for three decades, and in that time raised two great boys who are now very tall men, and taught at St Peter's College for many years. I look forward to working alongside you and the dedicated team at St Mary's to ensure your children are supported in achieving their goals this year.
We're excited to have our first whole school trip coming up this Thursday 13th of February. The children will spend the day in their whānau house groups. Half the kids will remain at school for the morning getting into some fun activities relating to this years theme 'Pilgrims of Hope' while the other half will walk to the Arts and Heritage Precinct to learn more about all things Eastern Southland (past, present and future) with experts Jim and Marcella Geddes, Stephanie Herring and Jacqui Byars. They'll swap half way through the day.
Children will have a snack break while at the Precinct. Bringing a drink bottle would be a great idea. There will be no heat ups available this day.
This is an in town, walking, low risk trip and therefore permission to attend is covered by the blanket consent form you signed last year or on enrolment (this blanket EOTC form covers the entirety of your child's enrolment at St Mary's). If for any reason, you'd prefer your child didn't attend, please let a staff member know. Families are welcome to join us for a look around - if you don't know what whānau house group your child is in, please check with their classroom teacher.
Incase you missed it ...
The Board have made the call that boys will have the option of wearing navy socks! Yay for not having to wrestle them onto your boys in the morning if they hate the feeling of the wool! Even better news, they’re cheap as chips and available at The Warehouse.
If you’ve purchased brand new grey socks from school, and your boy hates them, hasn’t worn them, and is keen on the navy instead, feel free to return them to the office and Di will credit the money to your school account.
Healthy Active Learning Consent Forms
Please get these back to school on Monday next week please. All students involved have received a hard copy version OR information of how to complete it online. If students would like to participate in this survey they need to have the consent form in.
