Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,

Winter weather still persists, and I thank the parents, family members, staff, and our community who were able to quickly mobilize and share information with the Avon Lake City Schools regarding treacherous outdoor conditions. The freezing rain and ice coatings made the early commute dangerous on Thursday morning, and we will default to affirming the safety and security of those traveling to and from school our top priority. Thank you for your patience as District leaders make decisions about our schools.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent online meeting regarding Kindergarten Registration. Very useful information was provided, and district officials recognize how significant a topic this matter is to incoming Kindergarten families, and its impact on the Avon Lake City Schools. In fact, WEWS News Channel 5 also recognized its importance, and ran a story earlier this week that prominently featured our school district. We invite you to watch that story here.

Two issues will appear on the May 6, 2025, ballot with the first being a bond issue to construct a new facility for Grades 5 through 8 at the Learwood location and make repairs to the elementary buildings, and the second being an operating levy for the purpose of general operating expenses. The bond issue requests approximately $88,085,000 and would cost taxpayers approximately $96/year for each $100,000 of county auditor appraised home value. The operating levy would generate $3 million annually and would cost taxpayers approximately $69/year for each $100,000 of county auditor appraised home value. Combined, if passed, these two issues would cost Avon Lake taxpayers approximately $165/year for each $100,000 of county auditor appraised home value. The ALCSD is able to reduce the cost of the new construction proposal once again, due to the cost-cutting measures already instituted over the last several months. Thank you to those who have shared positive feedback and expressed their intentions to participate in The Harlem Wizards Fundraising and Community Game at Avon Lake High School Gymnasium on Monday, February 17th at 7:00 p.m. Keep in mind that doors will open at 5:30! This event has been organized by the Avon Lake Travel Basketball Association in partnership with Avon Lake Schools (including St. Joseph and St. Raphael), and will be a night filled with basketball magic, laughter, and community spirit. Our school spirit, along with community support for our student programs, will be on full display, all while providing an event to promote our local businesses.

The Harlem Wizards will showcase their incredible skills, including dazzling tricks and high-flying dunks, as they face off against our very own Avon Lake teachers, administrators, travel basketball coaches, and board members. This is more than just a game—it’s a chance to create lasting memories with your family while supporting our student-athletes and school programs. It also includes so many interactive experiences for families alike! Be sure to watch the following video for a preview of the unforgettable experience provided by the Harlem Wizards!

Avon Lake citizens are encouraged to mark their calendars for the first Thursday of the month in March, April, and May as I, and our administrative team will once again host Coffee Talks at The Kitchen on Walker Road. These Coffee Talks are intended to be informal, but informative… personable, but important… and designed to answer your questions. As the ALCSD moves toward the May 6, 2025, primary election, we intend to be open and available to answer questions regarding the bond issue and the operating levy. The Avon Lake City Schools has recently created a page policy statement which applies to the district’s social media accounts, including Facebook, X/Twitter, and Instagram. This statement outlines the purpose of these online platforms and the circumstances in which the district may regulate speech.
