Welcome, new Extension Educator!
Renae Jenniges, Lyon County 4-H alumni is excited to be the new Extension Educator. An SDSU graduate brings youth development experience with youth ranging K-8 grades along with workforce development experience with grades 9-12. Renae has enjoyed broadening her relationships with businesses, families and different organizations within Lyon County. Renae looks forward to bringing her 4-H experience full circle in her home county. Renae enjoys spending time with her husband and son on their small acreage where she gardens and aspires to be a chicken farmer soon!

2024 Lyon County Fair Schedule
Please check out the 2024 fair schedule. There have been a few adjustments since Fair is 1 week later than normal in 2024!
April federation meeting !
The next Lyon County Federation meeting will be held on Monday, April 8, at 7 pm. We will be discussing the fair items, identifying summer program offerings, and the July Federation meeting. If you would like something on the agenda, please let Sam (jens0593@umn.edu) know by April 5.
Program resources
We have project resource books available at the Extension Office. These resources will guide you through beginning a new project and can help you further develop and elevate current projects. We have created a "library" for our resources: https://z.umn.edu/projectresources Please explore the library, and, if you would like to explore a resource, contact the office to check out the resource, or we will scan and email the resources for you so that you can make use of them. If you are interested in additional resources, please check out the 4-H Mall https://z.umn.edu/shop4H
LQA&E Training
In order to be eligible to participate in the State Fair, youth must have an active LQA&E or YQCA certification prior to the county fair. If you have questions about your certification status, please contact the Extension Office. Location for training will be the Extension Office.
Livestock Quality Assurance & Ethics (LQA&E) certification is a three-hour, in-person training that is valid for three years.

Rockets Away
Join us on Earth Day from your launching pads at home for the first session in our series as we discover rocket science! Learn how rockets are designed and how they lift into space. May the Force Be with You as we come together dressed up as our favorite Star Wars characters and blast off!
Who: Youth in grades 3 -8
Launching Dates: April 22 and 29 we will Zoom and learn.
On May 4 we will gather at a galaxy near you!
Time for this date will be determined
Time: 7 pm - 8 p.m.
Cost: Each participant will receive a kit with starter supplies for our virtual sessions. The cost per kit is $20 (check with your local Extension Office for scholarship opportunities)
Checks should be made to Lyon County 4-H, and mailed to 500 Fairgrounds Road, Marshall MN 56258

Deadline to register is April 15.
Virtual General Judges Training
Interested in judging at local county fairs? Join us to sharpen your skills to be a 4-H conference judge of general projects. Join us on May 6 and prepare yourself for upcoming judging opportunities. Register for this virtual training by May 1 deadline.
4-H Camp at Lake Shetek
4-H Camp is a great way to have fun outdoors and meet new friends! Camp will again be held at Shetek Lutheran Ministries on the shores of Lake Shetek; youth who completed grades 3-6 can choose one of two camp sessions (two nights/three days)
When:
Monday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m. - Wednesday, June 19 at 10:45 a.m.
Wednesday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m. - Friday, June 21 at 10:45 a.m.
This multi-county 4-H Camp located in southwest Minnesota will include educational sessions and camp activities include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, outdoor games, campfire, and more! High school-aged camp counselors will connect with campers throughout the entire camp experience.
Cost:
$150/camper. Registration fee includes meals and lodging for three days/two nights, supplies, and a camp t-shirt. Lyon County reimburses 50% of the registration fee after you attend camp
**4-H is committed to ensuring everyone can experience camp and sometimes families need financial support! Please contact your local 4-H Educator to discuss financial support. Also, Federations or clubs likely offer members support for camp fees.

Late registrations accepted until May 27, 2024 at a $175 registration fee. This does not guarantee a t-shirt.
Camp registration is handled through 4H Online, our membership database. For assistance, refer to the event registration guide at z.umn.edu/4hEvent or contact your local Extension Educator.
Bring a friend! No 4-H experience is required for 4-H camp. Not a 4-H member yet? Not wanting to enroll in the year-round 4-H program? You will still create an account (and be approved) to register for camp in 4H Online. Select “In-Person Camp/Event” club. Select any interest of your child for projects. After approval, you will be notified and can return to 4H Online to register for this event.
Shooting Sports Program
Did you know that Lyon County 4-H offers shooting sports through the Sharpshooters project club? The sharpshooters offer BB gun (3 grade +), archery (3 grade +), air rifles, and air pistols (4 grade +),.22 rifles and 22 pistols (7 grade +), muzzleloading (7 grade +), and shotguns (7 grade +)
If you would like to learn more or participate, let the Extension Office or the Sharpshooters club leader know!
