SCHOOL SAFETY UPDATE
Dear Westwood Families,
We hope this message finds you well. As part of our ongoing commitment to campus safety, we regularly assess and improve our protocols. Following the recent incident we communicated about last week, we engaged in discussions with staff, parents, and law enforcement. As a result, we will implement a new procedure for accessing the front office during school hours.
Starting Tuesday, October 1 (Reminder: Monday, September 30, is a non-student day), the front office doors will be locked throughout the school day. This measure will help us better monitor who enters the building and enhance overall safety. If you need to visit the front office, please knock on the front door and wait for a staff member to grant you access. Many neighboring schools have also adopted this practice.
Additionally, we have been in communication with our San Diego Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) to proactively address any concerns related to last week’s incident. Our SRO will be on site at our next Friday Flag event on Friday, October 4.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students, staff, volunteers, and visitors. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your continued support.
In partnership,
Bill Egan

PARKING REMINDERS
Westwood Families
As we prepare for our 123 kindergarten families to pick their students up at the normal dismissal time of 1:45pm, beginning on Tuesday, October 1, we are going to ask for your continued patience in the parking lot.
A few important reminders:
- It is our recommendation to arrive early, park on the street, or walk if possible.
- Please respect our student safety patrol and all staff members in the parking lot who are trying their hardest to keep students and families safe.
- The loading zone along the red curb closest to the school building is for loading only. Please do not leave your car unattended. This line moves very quickly as students are entering vehicles, and the system relies on drivers to stay in their cars at all times. This lane is marked on the parking map with a red line.
- There is also a lane to use to circle around the parking lot if you are waiting to enter the loading lane. The only way to enter the loading lane is at the entrance to the driveway, marked with a red star on the map, or when there is space just past the exit driveway.
- There is a large section blocked off with orange cones just past the front office. This is for the many school buses and after school programs who pick students up. Please do not park in the coned off section. This area is marked with an orange line on the parking lot map.
- Please do not double park along any of the red curbs on the exit side of the parking lot. This prevents other cars and buses from being able to exit. This means the driver cannot leave their vehicle if parked at the curb.
- Please follow all traffic rules including usings crosswalks in the school parking lot as well as out on Matinal Rd.
- Please discuss with your student the pickup plan.
Dear Families,
Next week, our school will focus on the character strength of Perspective. This means understanding and appreciating different points of view. Perspective, often seen as wisdom, goes beyond intelligence. People with this strength are valued for their advice because they see the big picture and understand complex issues.
Those with perspective can get to the heart of difficult matters and bring clarity. They are honest, ethical, and good at seeing what truly matters. This helps them stay calm and learn from mistakes. By reflecting on their own feelings and thoughts, they can empathize with others and offer strong listening and questioning skills. They help their groups navigate challenges and find opportunities for success.
To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.
Thank you for your support!
FOOD & NUTRITION
Food and Nutrition Reminders:
School breakfast and school lunch are FREE for all enrolled students, every school day. Meals must still be entered into the cafeteria computer by individual student account.
Even though meals are free, families are highly encouraged to complete the application for free and reduced-price meal eligibility. School site funding depends in part on the number of students eligible for free/reduced-price meals. Families that qualify for free/reduced-price meals may qualify for other benefits, as well. The meal application is available online at MySchoolApps.com.
Printer-friendly PDF menus are available on the PUSD Food and Nutrition webpage. At the top of the page, click or hover over School Menus + and then Printable PDF Menus.
Interactive, web-based menus containing nutrient and allergen details are available at MySchoolMenus.com, as well as via links from the F&N webpage.
FALL ELAC MEETING
DISMISSAL HELP
Westwood has over 840 students, and we need your help to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal. We are requesting that all parents, family, friends and caregivers to wait behind the yellow line on the pavement for your student. This will reduce crowding around the teacher dismissal area and improve safety for all. Thank you!
