THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - May 24, 2024
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
The Rainbow Arts Foundation, through the Olivia and Leslie Foundation and their partnership with the Shelburne Museum, is a shining example of how organizations can collaborate with our schools. These after school programs offer our students the chance to build friendships, solve problems, and unleash their creativity. This year, we saw our HCS students thrive in these environments, and the beautiful artwork they produced speaks volumes about the value of these programs. Thank you, especially Chris Kuenne, Founder of the Olivia and Leslie Rainbow Foundation. Chris’s vision has truly made this experience for our HCS children a fantastic success.
We are thrilled to share more about the wonderful opportunities provided to our Kindergarten and first-grade students through the Rainbow Arts Program. Supported by the Olivia and Leslie Foundation, this program allowed over thirty HCS students to explore and imagine using various art mediums, while also delving into math concepts like symmetry and geometry. It was amazing to see how the lessons connected art and math, showing our students new ways to think and create.
These afterschool programs are essential. They give our students the chance to make new friends, think creatively, and solve problems in innovative ways. We’ve seen firsthand how beneficial this has been for our children at HCS. We sincerely hope that this partnership continues to grow, allowing us to offer these incredible experiences to even more students.
We hope you enjoy the photos, showcasing some of their art and the special celebration held at the Pizzagalli Center at the Shelburne Museum.
Warmly,
Suzan and Tim

CVSD 4th ANNUAL PRIDE RALLY
Our school-based GSAs would like to announce and extend an open invitation to CVSD’s 4th Annual Pride Rally! The event is happening, rain or shine, and students, staff, families, and community members are welcome to come and celebrate alongside us. The event will be behind the school, under the canopy where the school buses come in.
The Pride Rally is an opportunity for our larger community to come together and celebrate our diversity, as well as support our LGBTQ+ community members in feeling seen, celebrated, and protected. Come ready to eat at the cook-out, jam out, hear from queer legislators, students, and educators.
This year’s activities include an optional out-and-back march into Hinesburg’s town center, and student-run tables with nail salon and temporary tattoos, pride swag, creating an art installation, and button making. Last but far from least, Vermont’s own Emoji Nightmare, a drag entertainer, will be joining in the morning to help us celebrate!
We hope to see you at Champlain Valley Union High School on June 1st from 10am-1pm!

FREE VIEWING ACCESS OF SCREENAGERS - UNDER THE INFLUENCE
In case you missed the live viewing of Screenagers: Under the Influence, ParentIN CVSD partnered with Winooski Partnership for Prevention offering on-demand and FREE viewing access until June 5th. This is the latest documentary in the Screenagers Series, “exploring the latest research and learning more about the personal experiences of teens and families…the film highlights the changing landscape of the substances themselves, offering solutions for how we can best empower teens as they face decisions about what they will and will not be influenced by.”
Ahead of summer’s more unstructured time and schedules, this is increasingly relevant for parents/caregivers of middle and highschool youth. At 70 minutes in length, watch from the comfort of home OR listen to it like a podcast - it’ll yield just as much information and impact. We promise!

INTRODUCING STOPFINDER
The Champlain Valley School District will use a new parent/guardian app, Stopfinder, for the upcoming school year. Stopfinder is the easy-to-use, secure, all-in-one app that allows you to have the most accurate information about your student’s bus schedule at any time from anywhere. You will be able to set up alerts to let you know when your bus is approaching for both morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off. Only parents and guardians will be able to see the information for their student(s) unless they authorize others to see their student’s transportation information in the app.
The email address that is currently on file in Powerschool with the district will be used for Stopfinder setup this summer. This is another important reason for families and caregivers to update Powerschool forms when requested over the summer. Please contact your school’s main office to make a change to your primary email address any time you have a change.
Stopfinder can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. Stopfinder will require an invite and registration through the district prior to accessing your student’s transportation schedule. Please watch for a Stopfinder invitation, which will be sent to your primary email address, between August 15 th and August 20 th, 2024. Please contact gmarckres@cvsdvt.org with questions.

CHARLOTTE - HINESBURG PreK @ HINESBURG COMMUNITY SCHOOL HAS OPENINGS!
The CVSD School-based Early Education Program is now accepting applications for additional openings at the Charlotte-Hinesburg Prekindergarten at Hinesburg Community School for the 2024-25 school year. This part-time prekindergarten classroom is a 5 STAR, licensed early education program that provides a play-based, developmentally appropriate environment for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS) and Teaching Strategies Gold. The program will run half days on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2024 and live in Charlotte, Hinesburg, Williston, St. George, or Shelburne are eligible to apply.
Please contact Erin Gagne, Director of Early Education at egagne@cvsdvt.org for more information or use this enrollment application to apply.
BE SMART THIS SUMMER!
Safety is always an adult responsibility.
Unintentional shootings are far more likely to occur when children and teens are home from school. As summer break approaches, it’s more important than ever to remember to secure all firearms and to ask about the presence of unsecured guns in homes your child visits.
Do you need to secure your firearm? Free cable gun locks are available in our school offices and the district's office; stop by and pick one up!
