Greetings From the Principal
"Synergy is better than my way or your way. It's our way."
-- Dr. Stephen Covey
What is Synergy? Synergy isn't the same as compromise. Compromise is more like 1 + 1 = .5 ...in other words, no one wins. Well, that just doesn't sound highly effective or win-win! Dr. Covey himself says it best, "To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it.
You know you're in Synergy when you:
- Have a change of heart.
- Feel new energy and excitement.
- See things in a new way.
- Feel that the relationship has transformed.
- End up with an idea or a result that is better than what either of you started with."
So instead of it being 'my way' or 'your way,' it becomes a Third Alternative - Our Way. Differences begin to be seen as strengths, and diversity is a valued part of the process.
Riverview students synergize all of the time! Students develop their own solutions to problems instead of telling on one another to a teacher. During class meetings, students discuss what is going well, and what they all need to work on to improve, by exploring alternatives and clarifying the end in mind. If you've ever been to a music program, you are synergizing when you are a part of putting benches and instruments away! If you've signed up to volunteer for the book fair or assist with a classroom party, you are synergizing with other parents to create events that would not otherwise be possible without teamwork.
Parents and staff have been Synergizing all year on the journey to becoming a Leader In Me school. Together, parents and staff have taken the time to learn about TLIM, hold important conversations about the positive impact it can have for Riverview, and volunteer their time and talents to support the school. The staff and interested parents received 7 Habits training. Parents have helped synergize by reaching out to local organizations and businesses to become school sponsors or donate auction items for the March 3 Barn Bash.
So this month, look for examples of how Synergy has improved your life, and how your own Synergizing improves others' lives by working together for a better outcome!
Smooth Sailing,
Beth Mildren
