January 2018
7th and 8th Grade Students to Take PSAT in January
Goodrich Middle School will administer the PSAT 8/9 to 7th and 8th grade students on January 9, 2018. In the event of inclement weather or school closing for any reason, a potential back-up date has been set for January 11, 2018. The assessment will begin promptly at 7:45am and takes about three hours to complete. Please ensure your child arrives to school on time and has breakfast that morning. The test will be completed before your child’s regularly scheduled lunch time. **In an effort to ensure an environment conducive to testing, 6th grade students will remain in their 1st hour class through 3rd hour on the day the test is administered.**
We are asking all students who have a PSAT approved calculator to please bring it with them to school to use on the day of the exam.
Permitted Calculators:
- Four-function calculator
- Scientific calculator
- Graphing calculator
PROHIBITED Calculators:
- Laptops or other computers, tablets, cell phones, or smartphones
- Models that can access the internet or have wireless, Bluetooth, cellular, audio/video recording and playing, camera, or any other smartphone-type features

December Students of the Month
Mark Your Calendars - GMS Winter Extravaganza/Talent Show
Our 6th and 7th grade classes are hosting this year's Winter Extravaganza directly after school on January 18th. Students and their friends are invited to perform their favorite lip sync or dance routine on stage in front of their peers. What fun! Student song choices and dance routines will need to be approved by Mr. Wozniak or Mr. Dawson in advance. Tickets for the event will go on sale during lunch the week of the event.
Sorry parents, this is a closed event for GMS Students ONLY.
Thank You, Goodrich Educational Foundation!
Students in Mrs. LaRowe’s 6th grade math classes (see below) used technology to research sales tax rates across the U.S. The students then went online gift shopping, calculated discounts, and stayed within their $200 budget. There were some creative purchases (pet toys and lava lamps), thoughtful gifts (books for their ELA teachers) and exceptionally smart shoppers who spent less than ½ of their funds! A HUGE thank-you to the Goodrich Educational Foundation for funding the grant request to purchase the Chromebooks for classroom usage!

Music Notes...
Congratulations to Ashley Brown, Daisy Baut and Madison Ayotte who have been selected to participate in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District III Junior High School Honors Band! They represent the finest musical talent in the 25+ schools of District 3!
Jan. 5th - Monthly Book Swap
Goodrich Middle School's next monthly book swap will be this Friday, January 5! The event issponsored by Cottage Used Books in Goodrich.
Students are allowed to bring in up to five gently used books to turn in to their ELA teacher the day before the event in exchange for tickets to pick out new books during the swap. Kathy Mulholland from Cottage Used Books in Goodrich supplies “new” books for the kids to choose from. This is a great way to clear out the books your middle-school student has already read in exchange for new reading material!
What Lifts You?
Student’s in Mrs. Leadford's Art class learned about artist Kelsey Montague and her #whatliftsyou campaign. Kelsey Montague creates large wing murals that invite people to stand in front of for a picture, and then post on social media with a positive message including the #whatliftsyou. These wing murals are located in major cities all over the United States and around the world.

Junior Thespians Begins January 8th
Reminder - Homework Requests
- Teachers are not required to provide work when a student is gone fewer than three (3) days.
- Work should only be requested if you feel your child will have time during his/her absence to complete all work and return it upon their first day back at school.
- In the case of illness or prolonged absences (3 or more consecutive days), parents may request work directly from the office. When this request is made, all work must be completed and turned in upon the student’s return. Failure to turn in completed work upon return to school will result in a failing grade for any missing assignments.
- It is recommended your child collect their missing work when they return to school, as they will have the same number of days that they were absent to complete and return it.
- As a reminder, medically excused absences (with a note from the child’s medical provider), death of an immediate family member/funeral (up to five (5) days), required court appearances and/or religious observances meet our excused absence guidelines. Any other absence, even those excused by a parent, will count towards total unexcused absence accumulation.
