Ms. Sonne is thrilled to join GBR as a K-5 Literacy Coach and is excited to begin reading with you all! She's been with the Mitchell School District quite a while. In fact, she student taught here at GBR 29 years ago! LB Williams Elementary was her first MSD work home for 10 years, and she most recently has been at the Middle School for 8 years. She is a National Board-Certified Teacher, specializing in literacy. Her only child, Meghan, keeps Mitchell informed of the current weather at KELOland. She fills her free time loving life with her water-loving golden retriever, Trygg.

Mrs. Rhena Weiss will be teaching 4th grade at Gertie Bell Rogers next year and she is beyond excited. This will be her second year teaching, first year teaching with 4th grade. She lives in Mitchell with her husband Brody. Brody and Rhena have been married for two years and will be welcoming a baby girl in July. Rhena grew up in Ethan, which is about 10 miles south of Mitchell. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. In her free time, she likes to go to rummage sales, be outside, garden, and watch tv series.

The Caring Kernel Award is given monthly to teacher nominated students who have shown to go above and beyond. Students are chosen for showing kindness to others at school or within the community, showing true Kernel spirit, having a positive attitude, demonstrating great sportsmanship at school activities, and overcoming hardships in school or at home.

The April 2024 student recipients are: Jack Willliams, Trigger Evans, Channing Sevareid, Harlee Zihlke, Kendall Aadland, and Griffin Lyle.

The May 2024 student recipients are: Aria Spinsby, Chelsea Von Eye, Owen Andal, Violet Ratigan, Ben McEntee, and McKenzie Claymore.
