The next cookbook that we will be cooking out of is "The Milk Street Cookbook" by Christopher Kimball. He brings his down to earth, beautiful and simple dishes from all over the world to life in this colorful cookbook. Doesn't Campenelle Pasta with Sweet Corn, Tomatoes and Basil sound awesome? What about Spanish Spick-Crusted Pork Tenderloin Bites? Baked Salted Salmon and Dill? So many delicious choices!
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
Martha Ballard was a midwife and healer in the small town of Hallowell, Maine in 1789. When a man is found frozen in the Kennebec River, Martha, her family and all the townspeople are horrified. As a healer, Martha is called in to inspect the body to try to determine the cause of death. Based on what she sees, she declares he was murdered. The dead man was a suspect in the alleged rape of a local pastor's wife and speculation is rampant on who killed the man. And what about the other man, a powerful judge, who was accused of the rape? Martha had come to the aid of the pastor's wife after the attack and documented her findings of injuries. There is no doubt in Martha's mind that the rape occured, but there is no evidence to prove who did it. This story moves quickly through the winter months. The reader learns of the process of being a midwife and many details of this the rape are somewhat graphic. In addition, the treatment of women as weak, ignorant and liars is rampant throughout the book.
