The regional MathCounts competition was held on Feb. 21st at the SDC. Public schools from Durham, Orange and Wake competed to score the most points during competition rounds. The Lakewood Montessori Middle team, under the direction of Coach JJ Van Vickle, came in 4th place. Good Job Team!

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

The Spring session of MSTA started off with a lot of energy and positive vibes! Every educator is focused on producing better results and zooming in on learning outcomes for students. See our Kick-Off video HERE.

Mathematics teacher leader Candace Lynch (Shepard Middle School) held a OOTB session on Effective Usage of Anchor Charts in the Math Classroom. If you would like additional information on how to use anchor charts in your class, please contact Candace for assistance. Her session was awesome!

The 7th Grade Team used our Carnegie Learning materials to teach cross-sections. Teachers planned collaboratively with their Media Specialist and EC Co-Teacher to make it happen. All three teachers merged classes in the library to co-facilitate the hands-on activity exploring cross-sections.

Most lucrative careers require a background in mathematics and if students leave elementary school without a positive growth-mindset and a firm foundation built for algebra, the doors for access into STEM careers may be in jeopardy. How do we keep the doors open for them?

In this webinar, we’ll explore how to create a positive growth-mindset and showcase the evidence-based results that can be achieved. We’ll examine how learning trajectories can be used to monitor and support mathematical growth during engagement in rich, vibrant math workshops in contrast to the use of textbooks, and how technology can be a powerful tool in providing differentiation and professional support.

For middle and high school students who are interested in COMPUTERS, MATH and/or SCIENCE, Shodor offers a variety of explorations to satisfy their intellectual appetites during time away from school this summer.

Middle and high school students attend separate workshops during the week Monday - Friday

Most workshops are half-day sessions
(9 a.m. – noon) and (1 p.m. – 4 p.m.)
Some are full day sessions (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.).

A web-based math program is challenging students from across the continent to show their skills in a free math competition open to all schools and grade levels.

At their own pace, in class or at home, students can work through standards-aligned games and question sets. The online environment of sponsor Mangahigh, first featured in these pages seven years ago, continuously adapts the Math Ninja Challenge to students' current level of demonstrated mastery.

The prizes include gold medals for students and Amazon gift certificates for schools. Register for one of Mangahigh's training webinars, starting the first week of March—also at no cost.

Students will learn the elements of HTML and CSS and use them to create a website. Using a text editor and web browser, students will edit web page templates and use them to make their own website. No programming experience is required

How do programmers think through problems? Logic is one of the most basic and important skills for a programmer. In this class, girls will learn about binary and how to solve truth tables. We will use logic gates to build a physical model of complex logic statements (A and B or not C and not D). Tickets are available on March 6.
