AVID CORNER
Kindergarten: Collaboration is a vital aspect of AVID. Future workplaces require staff to work as a team, collaborate, communicate, and compromise. In kindergarten, teachers begin preparing students with these important life skills. Activities as simple as playing together require students to work as a team. Aside from playing, teachers intentionally use teaching strategies that help students practice collaboration. Examples of this include small group games, partner reading, sharing thoughts with a friend on the carpet, and showing a friend their completed project. Not only do these activities develop important life skills, but they also make learning more fun by allowing students to work with their peers.
1st Grade: With our last round of conferences quickly approaching, first graders are looking at where they are in reading, as well as math and writing. When students see where they are, and where they need to be by the end of the school year, they think about what steps they need to take to make growth. Goal setting is something we practice year long, but especially this time of year. Can they add any extra math practice time in? Can they practice their sight words for 5 extra minutes each night?
2nd grade: Note-taking skills are vital for school success, and graphic organizers, or pre-set formats, are very useful to support student note-taking skills. Throughout this year, students have been exposed to many different note-taking graphic organizers and different note-taking formats. During this month, students will be applying all they have learned about taking notes to organize their thinking across several subject areas: Math, Reading, Writing, and Science.
3rd Grade: In April, third graders will continue to be good collaborators. Throughout the year, they have learned many ways to work with others, express their opinions, and share their thinking. They have been working in book clubs, expert groups, and small groups for discussions. Some collaboration structures third graders participate in include: World CAFE, Gallery Walks, and Philosophical Chairs.
