Grand Valley High School Shark Tank 2025
Grand Valley High School is hosting a Shark Tank experience for the high school students. Students, individuals or groups, can propose an idea that benefits the students of Grand Valley High School or the Parachute/Battlement Mesa community. Sharks, who are leaders within the community and not school district employees, will decide if the students' pitches are funded.
The first round of Shark Tank took place on March 4th. Nineteen students were involved in making pitches. Four groups' and one individual student's pitches advanced to the second round, which will be on March 18th at 6:00 pm in the Grand Valley High School cafeteria. Come cheer on the students and see how many are successfully funded!

Spring is on the Horizon
By Lucas Cotto, G16 Public Information Intern
As the days stretch longer and the snow melts away, the vibrant breath of spring awakens, filling the air with fresh promise. Even with the unpredictable Colorado weather, we start our spring sports with athletes showing great resilience preparing for games and meets.
The first girl’s soccer game will be held March 4, 2025 at Grand Valley High School at 4:00 PM. Come out and support our team as they hit the field for their first match of the season!
For track athletes, the first meet will take place on March 14, 2025 at Rifle High School, starting at 9:00 AM. We know our runners, jumpers, and throwers are eager to show off all their hard work and dedication.
As basketball season wraps up, we want to take a moment to congratulate all our players for their hard work this season! Their determination has been inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next year.
Following basketball, baseball season will be in full swing soon, with a packed lineup of games just around the corner. Our baseball team is ready to hit the ground running, and we’re excited to see what’s in store for them.
With the unpredictable weather, we’ve watched our Cardinal athletes run, hit, and score with unwavering love for their team and a relentless determination to succeed. No matter what curveballs the weather throws, our athletes are always ready to rise to the challenge. Their strength, hard work, and dedication are truly inspiring, and we couldn’t be more proud of how they represent our school with such determination.
As the spring season kicks off, let’s come together to support our Cardinals—at games and meets—because your cheers and encouragement make all the difference. Let's keep motivating our athletes as they strive for victory and show the true spirit of the Cardinal way! Go Cardinals!

Grand Valley Middle School (GVMS)
Dee Hankins
Grand Valley Middle School students and staff were fortunate to have Dee Hankins speak on March 7, 2025. Dee's story is inspirational. He told GVMS about his "life, curveballs, and home runs." When asked why Dee thought it was important to come speak to GVMS, he commented, "after today, now I can answer that question. It's because your students are going through a lot; they're enduring a lot. Some feel unseen. Some have been hurt by family members and friends. Being here today and sharing my story, I believe helped them realize they are not alone. Not only are they not alone, but they can get through whatever they are going through, and that, if you internalize it, is an everlasting message for them." To learn more about Dee and his message, please visit https://www.deehankins.com/. See the GVMS Facebook page for a video about the experience.
Thank you to the School-Based Family Resource Center for coordinating the event and bringing such inspiration to our students!

Outdoor Education News & Highlights
Do you feel like this winter has been a roller coaster or is it just us? We've seen unusually cold weeks backed up to unruly warm days. And now the snow keeps coming.
Here in Garfield 16 we have been taking full advantage of winter programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
We have been excited to offer students various programs to learn to ski and snowboard. The Learn to Ski and Ride club was a program where students from 4th-8th grade got to go to Powderhorn for a series of three lessons. High school students were able to participate and help get kids comfortable on the mountain.
The Earn a Turn program with AVSC took students in middle and high school to Buttermilk for a series of six days on the hill. Together, over 50 students got out to the slopes to become confident skiers and riders.
The GVMS Journalism class took students to Powderhorn for a day of shredding as well. Students will be making videos to document their adventure. Keep an eye out on our socials for their reels.
At CFL, students in kindergarten and 1st grade dove into their animal units and culminated in various trips. 1st grade learned about animal adaptations and how they survive utilizing guest visitors from service animals in the region and culminating in a snowshoe trip on Grand Mesa.
Kindergarten also learned about animal habitats and got to go on recent field trips to PSS Wildlife Foundation and RIDE Equestrian program in Silt.
BUE's 4th graders took their annual field trips to Grand Mesa for a day of snow shoeing learning about beaver habitats and wilderness survival. We are thrilled to continue this traditional trip thanks to the Parachute Kiwanis club.
Students in the GVHS Outdoor Club went on their annual winter camping trip also at Mesa Lakes Lodge. We had a wealth of first time kidos on the adventure guided more experienced students that have been on the trip year after year. Highschoolers made meals for their peers, pull rainbow trout from the frozen lakes, ski and ride at Powderhorn, cross country ski, dug snow shelters and many of them slept in their huts the entire night there.
The GVHS Outdoor Science class has been busy learning about hunter's ed and extending their learning beyond the classic hunter's ed manual with projects like safe firearm handling videos, animal dissections, and debates.
The weather this winter has been unpredictable and has caused us to change our plans, such as with the community ice fishing clinic and 6th grade cross country ski day, we have been able to still take over 500 kids in the district outside to explore their wintery back yard.
This Spring is filled with a jam pack outlook of trips and community events.
Please keep an eye out for some upcoming programs and events.
We have the Rifle Earth Day celebration on April 26th at Centennial Park.
Bring your bikes to the annual BUE Bike Derby on May 10th.
GCO will be setting up an indoor 3D archery shoot at Rifle Rendezvous on May 17th.
And our 2nd annual Parachute Pond Fishing Derby will be on Saturday, June 7th.
See you outside.

AVSC Earn-A-Turn Program Success
G16 was able to offer 30 students a unique opportunity with Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club (AVSC). With funding from Aspen Community Foundation, a close partnership with AVSC, and additional funding from Aspen SkiCo, G16'S "Earn-A-Turn" program was launched. This program allowed G16 students (for the first time in G16’s history) to learn to snowboard at Buttermilk Ski Resort in Aspen. We matched 15 at-risk students with 15 mentor students. The program is an incentive for at-risk students with behavioral incidents, attendance issues, or struggling to pass their classes. AVSC organized the instructors and students were able to get professional lessons during six different Mondays this winter season. SkiCo waved the rental fees for skis, snowboards, and boots, and provided funding so each student was able to eat lunch for free!
Thank you to our incredible team of instructors, AVSC, Aspen SkiCo, our chaperones, bus drivers, and all who made this program a success! View a fun video of the experience on the G16 Facebook or Instagram pages.

TRIO Upward Bound Painted SBFRC Food Pantry
Thank you to Luis Sanchez, TRIO Upward Bound Coordinator for Grand Valley High School and Rifle High School. Luis organized an initiative to paint the School-Based Family Resource Center Food & Clothing Pantry. Students from Coal Ridge, Rifle, and Grand Valley gathered on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Twelve students came to help give the Food & Clothing Pantry a fresh coat of paint, painted clothing racks, and began on a mural. According to Sanchez, "Claudia asked me to do something that represents the community. Since we are going to have students from New Castle/Silt, Rifle, and Parachute, I thought we would do something that represents the whole valley. It's based on history, so we will have a Ute dancer, a folklorico dancer, and a cowboy to represent the history. There will be some apples, as they were a big agricultural product around here. We will also incorporate corn, cattle, sheep, and hopefully mountains to represent the area like the Hogbacks in New Castle, the Roan Plateau in Rifle, and Mt. Callahan in Parachute."
Thank you to Luis and all the TRIO students who came to help give a fresh face to the Food & Clothing Pantry. See the School-Based Family Resource Center Facebook page for video footage.
TRIO's mission is to help first generation low-income students. According to Sanchez, "we help students overcome obstacles of coming from families that don't know how to navigate the higher education system. We also help students find scholarships and navigate financial aid." You can find more information about the TRIO Upward Bound program here: https://coloradomtn.edu/academics/college-prep/upward-bound/
MayFest
We are excited to invite you and your organization/business to participate in the 1st Annual Mayfest, a youth-led community event organized by the G16 Family Resource Center with help from the Town of Parachute and other sponsors.
The event is designed to bring youth, their families, and community organizations together to learn about local resources, career opportunities, and internships, all while enjoying a day of fun activities such as a 5k Run (benefiting the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Garfield County), Battle of the Bands, Show and Shine (car show), and much more.
We would love for your organization or business to set up a booth at the event. You can provide information about your organization, including resources for youth and their families, or sell your products.
If you would like to have a booth at the event RSVP by April 15th to confirm your participation as a trinket vendor or local organization/business.
We kindly ask that you bring a table, chair, and bilingual materials, and consider offering an activity or game for the youth at your booth. We ask that pop-ups/canopies be sized no larger than 10'x10'. Booths can start setting up at 9 a.m. and stay as long as you want. The event will end roughly around 10 p.m.
In addition to booth participation, there are other ways you can contribute, including making a monetary donation to the event or providing donated items for participant drawings to win throughout the day.
We would appreciate it if you shared this event with your network to help us ensure its success and maximize community attendance.

How to Contact Your School Counselor
Garfield 16 provides all students with counseling services through the school counselors. School counselors work with students to support their academic growth and success as well as their social and emotional development. School counselors work closely with teachers, principals, and parents to support students experiencing issues that impact their learning. These issues can be, but are not limited to, declining grades, poor work habits, organizational skills, distracting behaviors, school avoidance, anxiety, trauma, and transient personal or family issues, such as the loss of a loved one or change in family dynamic. A school counselor may work with a student on an individual basis or as part of a group. In addition, school counselors work with the administration to assess at-risk students.
At the elementary level, school counselors provide direct instruction to all students in social and emotional growth and wellbeing. Topics include social skills, recognizing emotions, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. For students who may be experiencing difficulty with social skills, regulating behaviors, or school counselors provide individual and group coaching.
At the secondary level, school counselors begin to support students with college and career planning and decision making. School counselors work with students on their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) requirements. School counselors facilitate college and post-secondary career and workforce exploration. At the high school level, school counselors work with students to ensure they are on pace for graduation.
