Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in our Middle Schools
Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in our Middle Schools
Ms. Butler from Educational Service District 112 (ESD 112) coordinates Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S (Schools Using Coordinated Community Efforts to Strengthen Students) at our middle schools in Washougal.
The Substance Use Prevention/Intervention Program is a comprehensive, integrated model of services that fosters safe school environments, promotes healthy childhood development and prevents alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse. Substance Use Prevention/Intervention Professionals are placed in our schools throughout Washington State to implement comprehensive student assistance programs that address problems associated with substance use and other at-risk behaviors. Students are encouraged to make healthy/safe choices for their lives.
Ms Butler works with all students running universal/all-school activities, runs small groups and/or meets with students individually. The Choices and Voices club will be starting in October. It is a place where students can encourage their peers by creating fun activities at lunch, creating positive posters and building community at our middle schools. All students are welcome to join.
Contact Ms Butler at wendy.butler@washougalsd.org for more details.

Washington State Department of Health - Healthy Youth Survey
The Healthy Youth Survey Provides Important Information About Adolescents
The Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) is a collaborative effort of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Department of Health, the Department of Social and Health Service's Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery, and the Liquor and Cannabis Board.
The survey provides important information about youth in Washington. County prevention coordinators, community mobilization coalitions, community public health and safety networks, and others use this information to guide policy and programs that serve youth.
The information from the Healthy Youth Survey can be used to identify trends in the patterns of behavior over time. In October 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018, students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 answered questions about safety and violence, physical activity and diet, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and related risk and protective factors.
Watch for more information regarding the HYS from your schools.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Mental health is an important part of overall health for children as well as adults. For many adults who have mental disorders, symptoms were present—but often not recognized or addressed—in childhood and adolescence. For a young person with symptoms of a mental disorder, the earlier treatment is started, the more effective it can be. Early treatment can help prevent more severe, lasting problems as a child grows up.
