Evergreen Middle School
February 9, 2024
Message from Principal Collins
Greetings Evergreen Families,
Scholars brought their report cards home on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Please go over their report card with them. Ask them questions about their classes and goals to finish this school year strong. Striving for academic excellence means taking a proactive approach. While grades are important, we also want students to celebrate showing growth and mastering the content curriculum through practice and work completion.
As we all know second semester has begun, I want to remind you all about some of our building wide expectations. Our School Board has approved a change in our dress code policy. There were two key changes in the policy:
Change #1: The updated policy clarifies that student dress may be regulated for one or more of these reasons:
- A health or safety hazard is presented by the student’s dress or appearance including possible membership in groups that promote hate or violence; or
- Damage to school property shall result from the student’s dress; or
- A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the student’s dress or appearance
NOTE: “Material and substantial disruption” is defined as any dress that is obscene, lewd, racist, violent, sexual, drug, alcohol or tobacco-related messages.
Change #2: The following items of clothing are no longer automatically prohibited unless they are causing one of the three reasons above to occur:
Pajamas, slippers, halter tops or any shirt that is short enough to expose the stomach, pants that are unusually low riding and are worn low on the hips revealing under garments, or shorts or skirts shorter than fingertip length;
Cell Phone Policy
Scholars bring cell phones (and other electronic devices) at their own risk. The school is not responsible and will not investigate if a cell phone (and other electronic device) is lost or stolen.
Evergreen understands the importance of communication between home adult and scholar, and the educational role cell phones may play in the learning environment. With that understanding, we agree that:
● Scholars can utilize their cell phones on school property before 7:40 am.
● Scholars may carry their cell phones on their person, in their backpack, or in another secure location.
● Scholars’ cell phones will be silenced or off during the school day.
● Scholars may not utilize their cell phones in the classroom.
● If a cell phone is used in the classroom without a teacher’s authorization, the teacher may:
- Give scholar a warning: redirect and reteach
- If it is a repeat occurrence, teacher should input comment in Synergy note section
- Ask the scholar to turn the cell phone in to the teacher and pick it up at the office after school and document incident through a referral (minor offense)
- Should the scholar refuse to turn in the cell phone but agree to put it away, the teacher should remind the scholar of the expectation, document incident through a referral (minor offense), call the office admin will collect the phone and contact the home adult.
- Warn student and parent that if student continues to use cell phone at school, student will have to leave their cell phone at home and not bring it to school.
February is Black History Month. We will be highlighting the contributions of African-Americans throughout the month with announcements, bulletin boards, art displays, and lessons in classrooms.
