Health Note from the WW Nurses
Please take a moment to review the letter that was emailed home to families this week regarding illnesses:
We have recently seen an increase in cases of flu related illnesses. We thought this would be a good time to revisit best practices for keeping your child home from school. We do believe school attendance is important, however, it is equally important that sick children remain at home.
A temperature of 100℉ or more is a sure sign to keep your child home. Giving a fever reducer and sending him to school will almost guarantee a call home when the medication wears off. Even if your child is without a fever while on medication, he is likely still contagious with whatever illness that is causing the fever. Please keep your child home until fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication before returning to school.
If your child has been vomiting or having diarrhea during the previous evening or night, please keep him/her home. Your child must remain vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Consult your physician if symptoms continue for more than 48 hours or worsen instead of improving.
Keep your child home if displaying heavy nasal congestion and/or frequent coughing. He probably feels miserable and will have difficulty focusing on school work, as well as sharing his virus with others.
Keep your child home with any undiagnosed rash.
If your child is diagnosed with a contagious illness, such as strep, he should be on prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child has crusty, red, or weepy eyes with thick or sticky eye drainage, please keep him home until evaluated by a medical provider. Prescription medication may be needed depending on diagnosis.
Please be sure that the school has current telephone numbers to reach you at all times in case your child becomes ill or injured. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure our entire school, including students, staff, and families, remains safe and healthy.
