Get Ready for a Sparkling Performance: Our School Production of Legally Blonde
The excitement is building as we eagerly anticipate our school’s upcoming production of Legally Blonde! This vibrant and energetic musical promises to be a highlight of the school year, showcasing the incredible talent and hard work of our students.
Based on the beloved film and stage musical, Legally Blonde tells the inspiring story of Elle Woods, a fashion-savvy sorority girl who surprises everyone by enrolling in Harvard Law School. Fueled by determination and a dash of sass, Elle navigates the challenges of academia and discovers her true potential, all while delivering a powerful message about self-belief and perseverance.
Our students have been rehearsing tirelessly to bring this story to life. From the catchy tunes and lively dance numbers to the witty dialogue and heartfelt moments, every aspect of the production is set to dazzle the audience. The cast has embraced their roles with enthusiasm, and their dedication shines through in every rehearsal.
The creative team, including our talented directors, choreographers, and set designers, has been working diligently to ensure that the stage is transformed into a dazzling backdrop for the show. With vibrant costumes, dynamic choreography, and an impressive set, the production will truly capture the essence of the bright and colorful world of Legally Blonde.
We invite everyone to join us for this spectacular event and support our students as they take the stage. It’s an opportunity to celebrate their hard work, enjoy a fantastic performance, and revel in the joy and energy that only a live musical can provide.
Mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable evening of entertainment. Our students are excited to share their talent and passion with you, and we can’t wait for you to experience the magic of Legally Blonde!

NPDC Youth Awards 2024
We are delighted to share some wonderful news with our school community. Congratulations to Rin Rielly Leadbetter and Kaden Rowe, who were both recipients of the NPDC Youth Awards 2024. This prestigious award recognises outstanding achievements and contributions by young people in our community.
Rin Leadbetter
Rin organised numerous impactful initiatives focusing on environmental sustainability and began a recycling campaign at Spotswood College. They lead the Queer Straight Alliance group at their school, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students and staff.
Kaden Rowe
Kaden raised money for local mental health organisations through his woodwork carvings and artwork. He is a talented young artist who cares for his own self-care and is a big advocate for mental health awareness. Kaden started his own charity organisation two years ago called Kaden’s Charity Woodwork Shop Est 2022.
Hosting Our Sister School - Hatsukaichi High School Programme
It was a privilege to host our sister school, Hatsukaichi High School, for an exciting and enriching programme. This visit marked another wonderful opportunity to strengthen our international ties and foster meaningful cultural exchange between our students.
During their stay, students and staff from Hatsukaichi High School participated in a range of activities designed to celebrate our shared values and diverse traditions. Highlights of the programme including a pōwhiri, cultural workshops, academic exchange and social activities.
It was great to be able to share our school and community with our friends from Hatsukaichi High School. A special thanks to Sensei Reiko Smithers, Nicky Healy, Tracey Laurence, our rōpū kapa haka and host families!

Student Sporting Success
Congratulations to Shyla Kennard (Year 10) for her results and achievements at the Wellington Short Course Swimming Championships in June.
Shyla came home with 3 age grade medals, 7 PBs and 2 NZ Short Course qualifying times in the 200m Backstroke and 200m Butterfly.
Ka mau te wehi Shyla! We wish you well for the New Zealand Short Course Championships later in the month.
Well done to Jahlia Manukonga-Te Uira (Year 9) who started Term 3 in Auckland, playing for the New Zealand U13 Indoor Netball team at the World Tri-Nations Tournament. Mīharo rawa atu Jahlia! An incredible achievement and no doubt the start of a long line of opportunities to come over the years.
Over the holidays we had a range of students playing in National Representative Tournaments.
- Taranaki Basketball: Komene Te Nana, Waylon Jones, Ashleigh Te Riini, Madison Abrams and Chloe Fisher
- Taranaki Netball: Sylvia Larkin, Amaia Sherry, Bella Tuavao, Tali Te Runa, Jahlia Manukonga and Robert Manu. Roberts’ mixed team unfortunately had to withdraw from the tournament the week prior, due to lack of entries.
- Taranaki Rugby League: Breez Manu and Paul Hinz, Taranaki Sharks U18
From the Sidelines
Well done to our school hockey team who recently completed their season, albeit prematurely. Enough cannot be said about how exciting it has been to say we have a school hockey team after 6 years. The team demonstrated perseverance and resilience in the face of weekly challenges, and their season regardless of results is a success. Big mihi to Whaea Zoe for taking the reins and challenging the notion that good players don’t make good coaches.
Spotswood College Netball is 3 weeks out from season end.
Pono remain undefeated in their netball season, something they have managed for 2 years straight. These girls love representing their school and playing together and the results reflect 2 years of hard work. Whakamana has been putting in the mahi as they juggle double headers, with less than ideal start times. Nonetheless, Whaea Lah has the team humming and has fostered a team culture for many students new to netball, where they can own their performances and enjoy the opportunities they get. A huge mihi to Whaea Lah and Tracey Schuler for your time and efforts with your teams.
Our basketball teams are toiling away working hard in the secondary schools leagues, with the senior boys and girls teams doing overtime in the NPBA Men’s and Women’s leagues. Our biggest growth sport at Spotswood College, the team of Mr Abrams, Mr Moratti and Matua Darryn Shaw have really started to build an exciting programme for our basketball playing students.
Term 3 of Spotswood College Volleyball League has started with a bang. Continuing on from the success of the inaugural Term 2 League; Mr Joe has students and our community engaged and creating a great playing opportunity for players from beginner to competitive. To see the gym packed from 4 - 9pm every Tuesday with people playing our most populous sport, we are certainly thankful for Mr Joe for offering this initiative to all.
SPORTS TROPHIES
Can we please remind any students who have any outstanding trophies to return them to school before the end of week 4.
Te Waka Manaaki - Emergence Art Awards
The Emergence Art Awards is an exciting art competition and exhibition that highlights the talents of young and emerging artists aged 13 to 26 in Taranaki. It's a fantastic opportunity for these budding artists to showcase their work to a broader audience.
Four students from Te Waka Manaaki entered their pieces alongside 130 other hopefuls, including some with visual art degrees. Exhibiting at Percy Thompson Gallery was a wonderful experience for them, and they received great feedback from the judges.
A special shoutout to Alex Heather, who won his category (2D other than painting) and took home a $500 prize!
For Alex, the creative process is not linear. As a teenager with autism, he is not bound by conventional methods of creating and is comfortable in adopting new strategies.
His creations are vibrant and compelling, with a humorous perspective. Despite the intensity of his work, Alex finds a serene calmness in the action of creating, allowing him to focus and express himself fully.
His gridded work "OHIO" is diverse, ranging across various subject matter and techniques, showcasing his versatility. Each piece is a vivid exploration of his thoughts and emotions, bearing his signature "OHIO" like a graffiti artist's tag. The work stands as a testament to his unique perspective and expressive spirit.
Maddison Hinton's work, Alien Princesses, features a delightful collection of whimsical alien characters. The work showcases Maddison’s sophisticated use of colour and her quirky sense of fun. Each vividly detailed being has a unique name, personality, and story, offering a fascinating glimpse into Maddison’s creative journey, to which she dedicates herself daily!
Aidan Gray, a student with Down's Syndrome, has developed a unique and vibrant artistic style. His dynamic, multi-coloured works depict energy and movement with distinct lines from markers and pens, each shape and pattern thoughtfully placed. He has produced hundreds of pieces in both 2D and 3D. "For the Wall" showcases the depth and beauty of Aidan’s inner world through his meticulous use of line and colour.
Step into a world where imagination meets deep emotions with Brooklyn Ardern’s reimagining of "Where the Wild Things Are." In his version, "The Beast," the story goes beyond the surface to explore the human mind. It features a frightening creature struggling with self-loathing and depression, reaching out for help. Brooklyn’s work highlights the struggles many face because of their differences and calls for understanding and connection. It encourages us to reflect on our own vulnerabilities and open up discussions about life’s challenges.
