Te Aroha Primary School
Term 4 Week 4 2022
PRINCIPAL / TUMUAKI MESSAGE
Kia ora parents and whānau,
Today in History - November 7, 1970 Last unclimbed face of Aoraki/Mt Cook conquered
Long-haired Christchurch mountaineers John Glasgow and Peter Gough became the first people known to have scaled the 2000-m Caroline Face of Aoraki/Mt Cook. They declared it a ‘triumph for the hippies’
What a busy week we have ahead of us. We have kapa haka today, Athletics day on Tuesday (Hub 2 & 3) and Hub 1 athletics on Wednesday. Here’s hoping the weather holds and we get both these days completed without needing the postponement days.
A big THANK YOU to everyone for supporting us with our hat policy. It is very much appreciated, sunsmart safety is so very important and must be taken seriously. If your child still needs a hat, please come and see Lucy in the office.
Swimming pool - the pool is getting ever closer to opening for the 2022/ 23 season. We will keep you updated with our progress towards opening. For those of you who don’t know, the pool is undergoing maintenance and we have been waiting on warm settled weather to get it painted. Also, in property news Guy, Dave and helpers are erecting a shade sail over the sandpit between Tikapa Moana (Hub 2) and the Library.
Lastly, we will soon be setting the direction for 2023 at TAPS. Prior to putting pen to paper we are asking that you share with us your thoughts, hopes and aspirations for our TAPS learners. Shortly there will be a brief survey coming to you via google forms. It will be quick and easy to answer and we appreciate your help in giving us your thoughts. By collating the information we will be able to create a truly responsive annual plan that reflects the needs of our community.
Have an awesome week everyone.
Ngā mihi nui,
Justin Bertrand

EXTRA NEWS and STUDENT VIEWS
SPORTS NEWS - Mrs Paul
Athletics:
Tuesday is the big event for students from Room 5 to Room 10. Come on in and watch your children - this is the first Athletics event we have been able to have spectators at for a while. We will be underway by 9.30am. Please make sure your children have sunscreen on before they come to school, their hat and a drink.
Wednesday is Junior Athletics Day (Junior Hub - Rooms 1, 2 and 3).
Basketball:
Draws are on the School App. NO MOUTHGUARD - NO PLAY.
School Hats
Hats MUST be worn during term 4. This is NOT optional, it is a health and safety requirement. Year 8 students are allowed to have a dark coloured bucket hat (no advertising on it), everyone else is required to have our school hat on. Any student without a hat will be placed in a shady area to play.
The statistics on skin cancer are very high in New Zealand and we wouldn't be meeting our duty of care if we allowed your precious children to run around without hats.
School hats are available to purchase for $15 from the school office.
I am Hope - Gumboot Friday
Awesome to see our school get in behind fundraising for Gumboot Friday with the sale of iceblocks. We raised $211, which will go towards raising funds for a free counselling service for children and young people across New Zealand.
You can also donate to this most worthy cause by texting BOOTS to 469.
Kia tu Kia toa Kia mau - accept the challenge.
Year 7/8 Technology at Te Aroha College
Please make sure your child has shoes that cover their feet (NO SLIDES PLEASE) and long hair needs to be tied up. Roll call for the bus at 8.30am outside Room 10. If your child is running late and misses the bus, please take them straight to the College.
Mini Lessons At Te Aroha College
Year 8 Students who are attending Te Aroha College next year, will be taking part in Mini Lessons after their Tech class THIS Friday. Our students will be given morning tea after Tech and will then rotate around various activities - "mini lessons" that give them the opportunity to experience what College will be like. Our students will be returned to our school by the College staff around 12.30pm.
*Students who are not attending Te Aroha College, return to school as per normal on the bus after Tech.

We have a busy week ahead:
Monday - Mrs Bartram is in. I am attending a SPELD course on Specific Learning Difficulties, such as Dyslexia.
Tuesday - Mrs Gamble is in. I will be on Day 2 of my course. Athletics day - please remember to make sure your child has hat, sunscreen, water bottle and snacks.

Room 7 – Mrs Paul
And so another week begins. On Monday we will do our final preparations for Tuesday’s Athletics and we can’t wait- hopefully the weather will be kind to us.Then on Wednesday we will carry on with our normal programme.
- In Maths we continue with different addition strategies and algebra. We also will focus on our last few tables- the 7s and 8s.
- In Reading we will focus on Non Fiction. Our testing showed that while we have many amazing Fiction readers, their comprehension skills on Non Fiction texts are not nearly as strong- particularly retelling and inferences. We need to be all- round readers.
- In Writing we will be telling stories(narratives) and having a play with descriptive writing.
- Passion Projects will also be up for discussion - watch this space.
TE MOANANUI-A-KIWA / HUB 3 / SENIOR BLOCK / YEAR 6-8
Room 8 – Mrs McKenzie
What a busy time we had last week, and it looks as though this week will be just as busy! We are looking forward to Athletics on Tuesday. We start at approx 9.15am, so make sure you pop along if you can. These students deserve amazing support on the sideline. Our new phrase last week was Kia kaha e hoa mā (Let’s go team). The new one we are learning this week fits in nicely with Athletics. Keep giving it heaps ‘Kia kaha tonu rā’.
Assessing has been going well and we will be finishing this up throughout the week. We end our AP&H craft activities on Monday ready for send off on Wednesday.
- We continue our narrative Writing this week, where students are really grasping using their creative and descriptive language use well.
- Maths we will be investigating new data, analysing it and displaying into some graphs.
- Reading sees us completing passages that link with our narrative. We are also looking at some financial literacy which I am sure the Room 8 will find super exciting as they dig into some ‘real life’ information, online research and collaboration.
Please remind your child to bring a drink bottle, school hat and to wear sunblock. The days are certainly warming. If you have any questions, please remember I am always happy to chat with you via email, Seesaw or in person. cmckenzie@tearohaprimary.school.nz .
Have a great week everyone!
Room 9 – Whaea Armstrong and Mrs Gamble
An action packed week ahead! Our School Athletics are this Tuesday (weather permitting), the postponement date is Thursday. We made a great start to testing last week. It has been encouraging to see all students trying their best and taking on the challenge. We are very proud of everyone! This week we will finish our testing and add the finishing touches to our AP&H show entries.
- Writing: We have really enjoyed writing narratives over the last few weeks and have developed our skills in writing plot twists. We hope to edit and recraft some of our writing this week so that we can share these on Seesaw. Keep your eyes posted!
- Reading: We will continue with journal contracts, alongside revising our reading strategies.
- Maths: Last week we began a statistical investigation on which brand of chocolate chip biscuit has the most chocolate chips - Is it the popular Cookie Bear or Value brand? We will conclude our investigation by collecting the rest of the data, analysing it and concluding our findings.
Reminders: School hats and drink bottles for the hot days ahead.
Have a great week!
Ngā Mihi,
Whaea Armstrong and Mrs Gamble

Kia ora koutou - we are really looking forward to the Athletics Sports this week - there is sure to be some very close and competitive events. Karawhiua - Kia kaha ake e kare mā! Give it heaps - Let’s Go team!
Be on the watch for new Seesaw entries this week - RM 10 love getting feedback from home. We enjoyed our session with Matt from Northern Districts Cricket last week and need to have our entries for the APand H Show completed by Wednesday (this may require some work at home!)
- Maths - we complete an investigation that will give us scope to collect data, analyse and present our findings. (STATISTICS)
- Writing - we will be publishing our narratives this week. Great to see the development of characters, using third person.
- Literacy Link - this is going to be extra cool! Starting this week, Rm 10 get to explore their passions and interests by preparing a TAPS Talk (similar to TED Talk) This will require the integration of reading, writing, oral language and ICT and will be a focus assignment over the next three weeks.
Looking forward to an awesome week.
