A letter from the Principal
As we enter the holiday season and the last week of school before Thanksgiving break, I want to take a moment to express my need for your assistance. I have noticed a shift in behavior on the campus and need your support and partnership to address it.
On Wednesday, November 13th, I held a virtual meeting during homeroom with the entire campus. In my Maverick Family Meeting I addressed my commitment to the change I want to see at MHS but need the students to meet me halfway. There are several little things that need to be cleaned up that I addressed:
- Cell Phones during instruction time and headphones during instruction and passing periods
- Non Compliance with the Dress Code
- Ex. Crop Tops, Slides, leggings, head coverings
- Being late to class
- Students Roaming the Hall
- Decrease in Work Ethic in the Classroom
- Eating in the Classroom
- Trash in the Cafeteria and Hallways
After discussing my expectations and what I needed to see from all of my Mavericks, I discussed all the great things happening on the campus in athletics and within our clubs & organizations. From Volleyball and football playoffs, to FFA Jacket Ceremony to our first ever Magical Maverick Christmas tree contest.
While I received great feedback from students and they understood that we can do better as a whole, we had 3 physical altercations occur this week. This is very disheartening and not the behavior of a Manvel Maverick. It is also disheartening that students would rather record and watch this type of behavior than be a leader and assist to deescalate.
I am writing this letter not to alarm you as parents and guardians but to ask for your partnership and assistance in speaking with your students about appropriate conflict resolution. I also want to reassure you that MHS is a safe campus and the events that occurred this week are not a representation of how the campus runs each week.
I do understand that students will have disagreements but they should not end in physical altercations. If your student is having an issue with another student, please have them seek assistance from an administrator or counselor. We are here to help students work through conflict as this is a life skill they will need well into adulthood. Physical Altercations will not be tolerated at MHS and will lead to consequences ranging from suspension, alternative school placement and arrests.
Please also discuss with your student the proper way to engage with each other on social media. Many times peer to peer conflict arises as students post hurtful comments on Instagram and other social media sites or they send messages in group chats that are later shared to cause more confusion and hurt.
The motto of MHS is Hoka Hey. To be Hoka Hey is to be unselfish and to be a community that cares for one another. I have believed in Hoka Hey since I first heard it at a football game in 2009.
I love serving as your principal and I take this role seriously. I take pride in leading MHS and I make it a point to model what Hoka Hey means to me daily by being visible around campus and supporting my Mavericks in athletics, fine arts, CTE and in the classroom by holding a high standard for academic excellence.
Today I am asking you to partner with me. Speak with your students about modeling Hoka Hey each day and to do the little things better.
Together, I know we can ensure each Maverick has a successful high school career.
Jamie Baldwin, Principal
