Volunteering at Our School: What You Need to Know
“The heart of a school is found in the hands of its volunteers.” – Unknown
We’re excited to have you volunteer and contribute to our school community! Below is an overview of our volunteer procedures to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all.
Background Check Requirements:
Most volunteers do not need a criminal background check but will go through our RAPTOR system for screening against sex offender registries. Background checks are required only in specific situations.
Volunteers Who Need A Background Check:
- Volunteer coaches.
- Chaperones for overnight field trips.
- Volunteers supervising students independently, without an SCPS staff member present.
Volunteers Who Don’t Need A Background Check (RAPTOR Check Required):
- Helping in the front office, cafeteria, or during events.
- Reading or assisting in classrooms.
- Day field trip chaperones where SCPS staff members are present.
Process For Background Checks:
For the small number of volunteers requiring a background check:
- Pick up a Fingerprinting Request for Volunteers form, signed by a school administrator.
- Provide valid identification, such as a driver’s license.
- Contact Mayra Torres to schedule an appointment.
- Background checks usually take 48-72 hours but may take up to three weeks in some cases. Please plan accordingly.
Interfaith School Dressing Days – Volunteers & Donations Needed!
School Dressing Days is a vital annual event held each July that provides new school clothes and supplies to financially disadvantaged families in Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford.
Each year, approximately 1,000 children receive essential items—thanks to the generous financial support of the Interfaith Community Council (ICC), its member religious communities, and private donors. The ICC’s School Dressing Days Committee works year-round to plan, purchase, and prepare for this impactful event.
What Each Child Receives:
- A backpack filled with school supplies.
- Basic toiletries.
- The option to choose a gently-used coat, jacket, or hoodie.
How You Can Help:
- Donate funds to help purchase clothes and supplies
A Registration Form is required to schedule an appointment time for families to “shop” for their items. Let’s work together to ensure every student starts the school year with confidence and dignity!
