Happy Sunday Carrillo Families!
We are so excited to have our students back on campus this week! If you have been following us on Facebook, you know that we've had a busy summer on campus. From deep cleaning the rooms to professional development sessions for staff to completing the renovation of a room on campus, we've been eagerly getting ready to welcome our young cougars back. That starts with meeting their teacher on Wednesday and then we will start the year off bright and early on Thursday morning. This year our theme is "Growing Together." As part of that focus, we want students to celebrate all of their successes, big and small, so they can reach their maximum potential. With the school and the home working together, our students can achieve great things!
The first half of this update has some exciting news and some reminders from Carrillo staff. The second half is a duplicate of the summer update with reminders about drop-off, pickup, lunches, etc.
Have a great Sunday! We hope to see you all at Meet the Teacher. If we miss you for that..we just can't wait to welcome you back Thursday morning! Be there on time to start your year off right, with perfect attendance!

Vote for Carrillo
We entered Carrillo in the General Dentistry for Kids School Supply grant process and we are so excited to announce that we have made the finals! There are 9 schools left and the top 3 vote receivers will receive funding for school supplies.
We need your help to get there. Each day from July 22 through August 5, you can log onto their website and vote for Carrillo. Please feel free to spread the word to your friends and families so they can support us as well.
A Note From Ms. De Lorenzo
Welcome back to another exciting school year! I am thrilled to be your child's MTSS facilitator. Some of you may know me, as this is my eleventh year at Carrillo, for those of you who don’t, my name is Barbara De Lorenzo. I started at Carrillo as a fifth-grade teacher and for the past three years as MTSS facilitator, I have been committed to supporting all student academic and social-emotional growth.
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a framework designed to provide all students with the support they need to succeed. Our goal is to identify and address student needs early on, preventing academic, behavioral, and attendance challenges from escalating.
Throughout the year, I will work closely with teachers, students, and families to monitor student progress and provide targeted interventions when necessary. This may include:
- Screening and assessing students' academic and social-emotional skills
- Collaborating with teachers to develop and implement effective instructional strategies
- Providing small group and individual support to students
- Communicating regularly with parents and guardians about student progress
I believe in the power of partnership between home and school. Your involvement in your child's education is crucial to their success. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to learn more about MTSS.

Your "Grow Together" Sprirt Shirts Support Student Council
Thank you to Adrian at Big Frog! This year, when you purchase Cougar spirit gear, $5 will come back to the school to support students. The store has this year's "Growing Together" shirts for students and parents, as well as our classic shirts and some designs from previous years. Check out the store online.
Submit Your Summer Projects
If you participated in the Principal's Summer Reading Challenge or Ms. DalPra's What I Did Last Summer Art Exhibit Challenge, you can begin bringing those items in as early as "Meet the Teacher."
Ms. Bittel will accept reading logs through Friday, August 2nd.
Ms. Dal Pra will accept artwork through Friday, August 9th.
Classroom Assignments and General Procedures
Teacher Assignments
Teacher teams met and reviewed a variety of data to ensure that students were placed where they would be the most successful academically and social-emotionally. Classroom assignments will be available the week of July 29th and will be posted at our “Meet the Teacher” event on Wednesday, July 31st from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. If you are unable to attend the “Meet the Teacher Event, please give the office a call and we can help you. Class assignments will also be available on your Parent Vue account once the school year rolls over.
Supply Lists
Many parents have reached out and asked about supply lists. Teachers will give their supply lists out at the Meet the Teacher event. They are also posted on our website on the right-hand side of the page. If you have trouble accessing the webpage for any reason, please email kenia.alvaradomartinez@tusd1.org or Kirstin.bittel@tusd1.org and we’ll get the list out to you.
Absences
Attendance at school is directly correlated to student achievement, so it is extremely important they are in school every single day to be successful. Research shows that missing more than 8 days of school can cause significant gaps in a student’s education. Please try to schedule appointments or family outings around the school schedule and during school holidays. To help track attendance goals, we've created a "Path to Success" attendance tracker you can use at home to help us make our 95% goal. You can download it by opening the attachment on your computer.
Volunteers / Visitors
Parents volunteers are welcome on campus. Speak with our office manager (Kenia Alvarado-Martinez) or our Magnet Coordinator (Rebecca Stroup) to learn how you can volunteer! We also encourage families to attend PTO meetings to learn about other ways to support our Carrillo Cougars. We encourage all parents to register as volunteers on the TUSD website (https://jobs.tusd1.org/volunteer) as the process takes a few weeks. We ask non-parental volunteers to contact the office before registering as a volunteer so we can explain the process and coordinate volunteer opportunities.
Healthy and Safety
Breakfast/Lunch
School meals are free for all students. Students who eat breakfast on campus will need to finish their meal before going outside as the cafeteria closes at 8:30. The Food Services website also has a page dedicated to each month's breakfast and lunch offerings. You can even even get a mobile app for your phone online. To get the monthly breakfast and lunch calendars emailed to your home, please sign up at the TUSD Food Service webpage.
Snacks
Snacks can be brought from home; however, we continue to ask that students not share anything with others as a health and allergen precaution. Additionally, students may not take snacks outside to eat. They must be consumed during class snack breaks or during lunch in the cafeteria. Thank you.
Water Bottles
It is still quite warm. So that students stay safe and healthy, we need them to stay well-hydrated. As you know, in the past few years, most of our water fountains have been replaced by bottle-filling stations. Thank you for sending your student to school with a reusable water bottle to refill each day. We highly recommend writing your student's name and their teacher's name on the bottle so that if it is left behind, it can be returned.
Transportation and Student Drop Off/Pick Up
TUSD Buses
For more information, visit Transportation's website to see if your student qualifies for FREE transportation and to begin routing. We strongly encourage families to consider this option for this school year. It's a great way to help your student develop independence and responsibility.
Morning Drop Off Reminders
Due to some budget changes, the earliest students can be dropped off is 7:35 am at 17th Street. The office does not open until 8:00 and while Ms. Bittel is usually on campus well before 8:00, she is often in meetings or other parts of the building and unable to hear the doorbell. From 7:35 - 8:00 the only safe drop off is 17th Street. Thank you for helping us to keep all our cougars safe in the morning.
Dismissal Reminders
Parent Pickup will continue to be at 17th street. Thank you for remaining in your car. We’ll be using radios and a loudspeaker to call for students this year in hopes of speeding up the process. Please note that the city has redefined some fire lanes that must be kept open along Samaniego with bright red paint. Thank you for not parking or stopping in those spaces. Thank you also for keeping the neighborhood driveways and mailboxes open as a courtesy to our neighbors. Thank you for your help!
We know that the 17th Street area can get a bit congested at pickup. To help alleviate the situation, the City of Tucson has installed new signs to direct traffic and changed the direction of Samaniego Street. The City of Tucson is requesting that families picking up on 17th Street exit the neighborhood using the following route.
- Travel west on 17th Street
- Turn south on 11th Avenue
- Turn west to access the frontage road or turn east to return to Main Avenue and 22nd Street.
Our neighbors kindly ask that you leave the driveways and corners open when you park so they can enter and exit their homes safely. If you do wait in your car along Samaniego, thank you for waiting at the bottom of the hill on the east side of the street so the roadway is clear for all vehicles and families crossing the street.
We are also asking families to arrive no earlier than 2:35 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and no earlier than 1:35 on Wednesdays. Parents of intermediate students, if you plan to arrive at 2:50 or 1:50, that will give the primary students time to load up and reduce your wait time.
Thank you also for being patient, driving slowly, and watching the road carefully. The streets behind Carrillo are narrow and we want to avoid any accidents. Our neighbors kindly request that everyone drive like they live in the neighborhood, and many of our cougars do. Thank you for helping us keep our Cougars and our community safe.

Walking/Biking Home
If your child is walking/riding home, thank you for ensuring the office has a note giving permission at the beginning of every school year. Thank you for making any pickup arrangements with your student prior to your student coming to school.
General Information
Summer Art Challenge
Did your student create some artwork this summer? Do they want to share it with the Carrillo Community? If so, please bring it in at the beginning of the school year for our first annual What I Did Last Summer Art Exhibit. Work can be of any material – drawing, painting, sculpture, craft, or the like. Bring your child’s art to school from August 1-9, 2024, and you are in! Don’t forget to include a fancy label explaining something about the work on display. Carrillo Looks forward to your creations. Let's start the year off by stuffing our gallery with creativity!
Extended Day Applications
Extended Day applications will be available starting Friday, August 2nd to ensure that everyone has equal access and to ensure that we have an accurate course catalog to select from.
As a reminder, fees are $125 per student/per quarter. If you have multiple students, the fees for each other sibling is $75/per quarter.
Social Media
Parents, we are asking for your help with social media. As a reminder, most social media user agreements state that users must be 13 or older to have an account. Please take a moment to discuss the reasons for the age limits with your students.
Most social media sites do not allow attacks or abuse based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability or disease. Please encourage students to be socially conscious and report any accounts that violate those policies directly to the social media platform before blocking the account.
Attendance Reporting Made Easy
- Log into ParentVue from App or Computer
- Click the "Attendance" tab on the left column on the computer or on the App as soon as you log in the blue "report absence" with a small bell icon is there.
- On the top right corner of the page it will have a blue link that says "Report Absence" click on this
- Use the calendar to select dates and the drop-down for the reason for the absence.
- You may also add notes or upload a doctor's note and hit "save".

This year we hope to have more families involved so that we can see even more rewards come back to the school to benefit the students directly.
