Principal's Message
Greetings KP Community,
I can't believe that Term 1 is already over and we are into November. The beginning of the year has flown by but students are making great progress here at KP. It is wonderful to walk through classes and experience the teaching and learning that is taking place. It is equally as exciting to chat with students about the extracurricular activities they are part of and the community projects that are underway. The start of a new term always brings a unique opportunity for students to reflect on the progress they have made and make any necessary adjustments to ensure their success moving forward.

Counseling Updates
Financial Aid Information Night:
DECA student group Debt Defenders, in conjunction with the KP School Counseling Department, are hosting a MEFA Financial Aid Night in the KPRHS Library on November 8th at 6pm. This event is free and open to all KP students and families. This presentation provides information and clarity on the entire college financial aid application process. Attendees will learn about financial aid applications and types of financial aid, the factors that determine your aid eligibility, how colleges determine the amount of aid to offer, and the details of financial aid offers.
College-Bound Seniors--Important Information
Requests for senior transcripts and counselor letters of recommendation have been pouring into the counseling office this fall. The counselors are working steadily to meet the needs of all KP students. Historically, KP has over 85% of our senior class apply to college and over 50% of seniors apply with an Early Action deadline within October and November!
Please remember, the counselors work backwards from college application deadlines. To ensure a smooth process in sending your supporting documents out in a timely manner, please be sure to complete the following steps:- Seniors should join the Google Classroom for the Class of 2024 and check it often for information, resources and how-to’s. All steps below are explained in detail in the resources in the Google Classroom. Join Code: 6jk6iut.
- Junior Questionnaire in the Google Classroom must be completed for your counselor to write a letter of recommendation
- Senior Update Form in the Google Classroom must be completed for your counselor to know if you require a letter of recommendation from them
- List all your colleges in Naviance (regardless of application type: Common App, Direct to Institution, etc.)
- If using the Common Application, Match your Common App with Naviance.
- Request initial transcripts in Naviance
- Check application deadlines in Naviance–this is where the counselors see your application deadlines!
- Keep track of deadlines. You do not want to miss a deadline or turn in a late application--You DO NOT need to wait for your counselor to submit documents for you to submit your application. We recommend seniors submit applications prior to the application deadline.
AFL-CIO Scholarship Opportunity:

KP Cares - Holiday Gift Drive
KP Cares, a community service group made up of KPHS Students is planning its 9th annual Holiday Gift Drive.
The Giving Tree helps support local families that need help during the holidays with gifts for their children. If you could use some assistance this year please email Mrs Rowe for a request form and submit it back by November 13, 2023.
While we would love to help as many people as possible we must limit our support to those families that live in one of the 3 towns King Philip services: Norfolk, Plainville or Wrentham. All family names will be kept completely confidential as only our faculty advisor will know who they are.
We are asking that you only request 3 items per child and that the children be between the ages of 0-18 (or if 19 are still in high school) as we hope to be able to help every family that submits a request.
Please note since these gifts are being purchased by students and we anticipate an increase in requests we are not in a position to fulfill requests for TVs/video game systems/or individual items in excess of $100.00.
Please submit forms through email to rowec@Kingphilip.org
Or by mail to: Cheryl Rowe – KP Cares Advisor

KP Cares members are holding a linen drive to support this organization and members will be volunteering at their facility on November 14. We are collecting sheets, blankets, comforters, pillow cases, towels, kitchen towels in sizes crib, twin, full or queen. These items can be new or gently used (Please no stains or tears). Donations can be given to any KP Cares member or dropped off to Mrs. Rowe in the HS library before 11/13. We will be taking the donations with us on our volunteer day.
Homecoming Dance - Success!
KP DECA
Congratulations to DECA for a successful Installation & Initiation Breakfast. It was wonderful to welcome the newest members of the 9th grade class and celebrate the DECA leadership team. We appreciate having Representative Marcus Vaughn deliver the keynote address encouraging our students to continue pursuing their interest in business and entrepreneurship.
9th Grade - SBIRT Screening
Ninth Grade SBIRT Screening - Week of November 6th 2023
SBIRT health screenings for 9th grade students will be conducted through History classes on Tuesday 11/7/23 and Thursday 11/9/23 in the Health office.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In response to the increase in drug and opioid use in Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker signed into law “An Act relative to substance use, treatment, education and prevention” (H. No. 4056). Among its many components, this law mandates that school districts annually conduct verbal substance abuse screenings in two grade levels.
In compliance with this law and in order to help prevent students from starting to use substances, or intervene with early use, our office will be conducting an interview-based screening for 9th grade students around the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. This screening will follow the SBIRT protocol (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) developed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and will utilize the CRAFFT screening tool, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Substance Abuse. Student screening sessions will be brief (approximately five minutes) and conducted confidentially and in private by the school nurse or a school counselor who has been specially trained to conduct the screening. Healthy life choices will be reinforced by the screener. The screener will provide brief feedback to any student who reports using substances, or is at risk for future substance use. If needed, the student will be referred to our adjustment counselor or social worker for further evaluation. Results of the screening will not be included in your student’s school record.
As with any school screening, you have the right to opt your student out of this screening. If you wish to do so, please utilize the SBIRT Opt-Out Form to indicate that you do not want your student screened. Additionally, screening is voluntary and students may choose not to answer any or all the screening questions. If you have specific questions about the screening, please contact King Philip High School Nurses at hsnurses@kingphilip.org
Sincerely,
Tara Esposito and Kathy Puzas

Free and Reduced Cost Meals Application
Please note that even though meals will be free for all, it is very important for families in need to still complete the household Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals for the 2023-2024 school year. This allows districts to establish eligibility for other federal benefits and school programs. Families who have been eligible for Free and Reduced Meals in the past must apply again for 2023-2024. Please know that the application is confidential with only the Director of Food Services and administrators having access. All students receive the same meals.
