Have you been ABSENT?

· Students with more than 5 unexcused absences in a class will receive a grade of 69, if you are passing the course.

· These absences are counted PER CLASS PERIOD.

· If you have been absent more than 5 days in ANY class period, you will need to attend Attendance Recovery in order to keep your grade in the course.

· Every time you attend Attendance Recovery awards you are awarded two class periods of “Made Up Time”.

· If this time is not made up by the end of the semester grading period (Dec 17th), students will receive a grade of 69 in their course work.

· Attendance Recovery is held Monday- Thursday from 2:45 to 4:15 in room 124. You must sign in and stay the entire time to receive credit. 32 students max capacity. No more than this are allowed to stay.

· You must bring work with you or work on the computer. You are not allowed to be on your phone or sleep during attendance recovery.

· If you are unsure about your attendance, please login to your student portal to see your absence report.

LEDA has been recognized as an emerging leader not only in the national effort to improve college access for low-income students but in the real difference we make for students once they get there. In 2014, we participated in the first White House Summit on College Opportunity for Low-Income Students – a recognition of the impact our distinct approach has on the success of our Scholars in college and far beyond.

To be eligible to apply, a student:

• Must be a junior attending a public high school in the U.S., graduating in 2023
• Is a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or has DACA Status
• Has an annual household income under $90,000
• Has a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5

On Friday, December 10, 2021 Miss Alicia Ford, 2020-2021 Cherry Blossom Queen, Ms. Angela Boykin, 2020-2021 Cherry Blossom Legacy Queen and 2013 Cherry Blossom Queen Ms. Hannah Theus, Graduate of Howard High School held an Informational Meeting in the Auditorium at 10:30am for the Cherry Blossom Queen Program for our young ladies who are seniors this year. The Queens encouraged the young ladies to apply and informed that the queen receives a scholarship to Wesleyan College here in Macon, GA. If you are interested, please apply by January 14, 2022.

"The Cherry Blossom Queen" will be crowned to serve as an ambassador during the 40th Cherry Blossom Festival, March 18 - 27, 2022 an serve throughout the year at various appearances and events as well.

The Cherry Blossom Queen will be chosen from applicants who are high school seniors. The Queen will be selected based on application, a GPA minimum of 3.0, 3 letters of recommendation, an interview and essay focused on knowledge of the Festival as well as community involvement."

Seniors you may still pay your Senior Dues to Mrs. Bibb in the Administrative Office Suite. Dues are $200 and must be paid to purchase a Prom Ticket for the Senior Prom (April 30, 2021). Dues also covers Senior T-shirt for Staycation (March 4, 2022), Senior T-shirt, Yearbook, Class of 2022 yard sign, Senior Honors Day Refreshments, and Staycation Lunch.

Seniors who are interested in attending Grad Bash on April 8, 2022 must make separate payments to Kelly Tours. The Grad Bash at Universal Studio payment is paid directly to Kelly Tours and must be paid in full by March 1, 2022.

Attention Class of 2023:

Remember Junior Dues are $150 - Includes Yearbook, class t-shirt, and two breakfasts. See Ms. Bath in room 501 for any questions. Make all payments with Mrs. Bibb in the front office.

The Talk and Actions as Windows strategy is designed to support comprehension of a fictional text. The skill of inferring will be applied in this strategy as students notice how a character acts while talking, they will pay attention to dialogue and actions, and draw a mental list or an actual list of character traits. Prompts can be used to provide scaffolds for students as well as guide their thinking. Prompts may be as follows: (Serravallo, J. 2015. Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything guide to Developing Skill Readers).

Prompts:

· What is the character’s action? Name a trait that fits that behavior.

· As you look at your list of traits, think about how you would describe the character.

Students may check out books from the media center with a pass from their teacher or teachers may sign up to send small groups of students! We have lots of new books available. Also visit Sora Bibb in Classlink to check out ebooks right from your laptop! Students who need assignments printed may use the QR Code in this newsletter to upload assignments that need printing. Come see us today!

The winner for the Read Grateful Challenge is McKayla Waller from Mrs. Stubbs 5th period class. McKayla read the most minutes (390 logged minutes) and earned the most badges (11). The Media Specialist presented her with a $10 gift card from Chick-fil-A. Congratulations!

Howard students compete at The Region Conference on Friday, December 3, 2021, 22 students competed; 19 of the 22 students will advance to the State Competition. Congratulations!
