Fall Field Trip to Connor Prairie
I will be drawing names for field trips chaperones on Monday. Thank you to all parents that have offered to volunteer so far. If you are still interested in chaperoning, please be sure to have the student field trip form turned in by Monday morning with the chaperone box selected. Make sure you have your background checks and anti-bullying webinar completed if you volunteered to chaperone. There is a link at the end of the newsletter. Thanks!
Forms are due Monday, October 5th.
Parent Teacher Sign-Up
Please Check the Times below. These are the times I have you down for our Parent Teacher Conferences. Please let me know if you have a conflict or if I have made a clerical error. There were quite a few families that contacted me to switch, and it's entirely possible I made a few mistakes, so please double check that what you have is what I have. If you haven't signed up, just shoot me an email with the preferred available time and I'll add you to the list.

Reading and Writing Workshops
We've been discussing Plot, Setting and Point of view in Reading Workshop. Students are also well into their group books. We've been working on asking good questions as we read. We've also been working on having meaningful conversations as readers. Next week we will focus in on the reading strategy of Monitoring Understanding.
In Writing Workshop we've been working on our Personal Narratives. Most students were able to complete their Personal Narratives this week. If they didn't they will need to wrap up any writing they still need to do at home. We will begin our Realistic Fiction Unit next week.
Homework
Students should continue to read for 30 minutes each night.
We learned a new math game this week called Top It. It's basically War, but with two cards each. Each person adds their two cards together, and the one with the highest sum wins. In case of a tie, you each flip over two more cards and the highest wins all the cards. What I like about this game is it's very versatile. You can play it with subtraction, or multiplication. You can make the rule that the lowest total wins. All these variations keep it fresh! It's flashcards, but lots more fun because it's interactive and competitive.
Keep working on students seeing "short cuts" or more efficient ways to add. Stress strategies: when you use double to add, or doubles plus one, or when you build to ten. These strategies make adding more efficient than using fingers to add.
Try out MobyMax by going to https://www.mobymax.com/signin and entering the log in information students brought home.
VolunteerSpot is set up
We're using VolunteerSpot (the leading online Sign-up and reminder tool) to organize our volunteers.
Weekly opportunities: Right now I have put up a reading spot that will take place Monday-Thursday each week.
Other volunteer opportunities: I would always love to have parents come in to be a mystery reader or talk about your area of expertise (career, hobby, etc.). If you are interested in serving our classroom this way, please email me and we will set up a time!
Here's how it works in 3 easy steps:
1) Click this link below to see our Sign-Up on VolunteerSpot
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on VolunteerSpot.
