Nurse Sarah News
Happy October, families! With October comes lots of fall treats and every kiddo’s favorite day…Halloween! This month we are going to focus on dental health so that you and your child can enjoy some sweets worry-free.
What are cavities?
All mouths contain bacteria living on and around the teeth. When your child consumes food and drink containing sugar, the bacteria produce plaque, the white film that coats teeth. This plaque causes decay of the tooth, known as a cavity.
Why it Matters
According to the CDC, about 20% of school-age children have an untreated cavity. Cavities can be painful and result in difficulty eating, playing and talking. Cavities can also lead to infections which can be extremely painful and more complex to treat.
If possible, take your child to the dentist every 6 months, as well as any time they complain of tooth pain.
Dental care can be expensive. If you are concerned about this, check with your local dental schools to see if they are offering free clinics.
Talk to your child’s school to see if they have a dental sealant program scheduled. Many organizations will come to schools to provide this service and screen for other dental problems.
Talk to your child’s school nurse, medical provider, or dentist for assistance obtaining toothbrushes and toothpaste if needed.
Have your child watch YouTube videos or read books teaching about dental health.
Teeth-brushing Basics
Have your child brush at least twice a day (morning and night). If possible, encourage them to brush after meals or after consuming sugary treats.
Choose a toothbrush that fits easily in your child’s mouth and can reach spaces between the teeth and the cheek.
Choose a fluoridated toothpaste for your child (if over age 2). Watch your child to make sure that they spit it out when they are done.
Teach your child to brush all of the surfaces of each tooth using small circles. Don’t forget to have them brush their tongue as well!
Brush your teeth alongside your child. This models healthy behavior and allows them to get a sense of how long the process should take.
Important Dates:
- Flu shot drive at Family Center for Healthcare are on September 28th from 10am-1pm & October 2nd from 4pm-6pm (no appointment needed!)

Grade Level Tid Bits
Kindergarten
This month in Kindergarten, we’re excited to dive into Unit 3 of our reading curriculum! Students are making great strides in connecting sounds to symbols, blending sounds into words, and learning the common spellings for eight key sounds in English.
We’ll also be introducing students to timeless classic stories like "The Three Little Pigs," "Chicken Little," and "The Bremen Town Musicians." They’ll meet memorable characters like Goldilocks and the Billy Goats Gruff and explore fun trickster tales, where clever characters outsmart the bigger, stronger ones.
1st Grade
October in first grade is going to be full of excitement as we wrap up our Human Body lesson with hands-on activities that will get everyone engaged! Our young scientists will explore the wonders of the human body in fun and interactive ways during the first week of October. We can’t wait to see their curiosity soar as they learn all about how their amazing bodies work!
2nd Grade
Second grade has been on fire! We worked hard and successfully completed our first CKLA (Reading Curriculum) Skills 1 assessments—what an achievement! Now, we’re gearing up for an exciting new adventure as we dive into Knowledge 2, where we'll explore the wonders of early Asian civilizations. Plus, we’re about to embark on a map-making journey, discovering how to navigate the world around us. So much fun and learning ahead!
3rd Grade
Third Grade Thrills!
We wrapped up our Classic Tales unit in CKLA with an unforgettable "Tea Party" celebration, thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers who made the event so special. Now, we're excited to dive into Unit 2, where students will explore the fascinating world of animal classifications through engaging non-fiction texts. Let the new adventures begin!
4th Grade
This month in 4th grade, our students are embarking on an exciting journey through the Middle Ages in English Language Arts! From knights to castles, they’ll explore the rich history of this fascinating era. In math, we’re finishing up our work on area models and partial products and gearing up for our next big adventure—division! We can’t wait to see their skills grow as they tackle new challenges.
It’s going to be another exciting month of discovery and learning!
P.E. with Mr. Miller
The month of October is an exciting month with some of my favorite activities to teach. The 3rd and 4th grade students will participate in a two-week volleyball unit. All of the students will participate in a week of drums alive which incorporates exercise through rhythm and dance. A favorite activity for the year occurs during the last week of October. The students will do a bowling unit concluding with a trick or treat cosmic bowling party. Don’t forget to wear neon on that day!
With Happy Health

Fourth grade is in full swing preparing both recorders and their musical for December. A quick reminder for students and parents: recorders are not bought from the school. If they wish to own a recorder, the letter sent home gives great suggestions for purchase.
Third grade is learning about all different musical aspects, such as mode, rhythm, and mood. Since there is a lot of spooky music to experience in October, we are studying the difference between minor and major modes in music and what moods are in "spooky" songs. We are continuing to work on rhythms and how they are applied to different pieces.
Second grade is enjoying listening to different styles of music all month and see how different dynamics are incorporated. We are continuing with rhythms and steady beat are applying these concepts to various instruments. In addition to all of this, we are doing fun and musical fall and spooky activities like "Spooky Bubbles" and "Pumpkin Stew."
Black cats and spiders, oh my! First grade has quite a few activities involving black cats and spiders while working on steady beat and naming rests. (We have been calling it "shh" until now.) New rhythms and concepts will be experienced and learned through themed activities.
Kindergarten is learning all kinds of nursery rhymes while learning music concepts such as high pitches versus low pitches, sound and no sound, pulse/ steady beat, movement to music, and so much more. We will also do some themed activities that the kiddos are sure to enjoy.

Happy October Art News!
Students have been learning tons of tricks creating their art and have been treating me to
unique and imaginative pieces.
Colby Community College generously donated their time to help in classrooms. It was very much appreciated and students had a ball!! No really! Check out the rolling marble art!
Mrs. Austin & the ESOL Team
It is wonderful to see and hear the growth that our second-language learners are making, especially since it is a great challenge for students to learn new content, a new culture, and a second language simultaneously. Although we experience scheduling conflicts and challenges, we continue to provide student support in the classrooms while also advocating for the needs and interests of our second language learners and their families.
We are off to a great start and we’re ready for the 2nd quarter!

Math Camp with Mrs. Stacy
Math Camp aka Title I Math is off to a great start! I am excited to start the year and help our students grow a love for math!
Third and fourth graders are working on different multiplication strategies to use. We encourage the students to practice the strategy that they are most comfortable with even if it is not the traditional algorithm like some of us learned. The students will eventually move to the traditional algorithm on their own once they are comfortable with the new skill. Students are also working hard on being able to recall their multiplication facts quickly.
First and second graders are working hard on fluently adding and subtracting. While 1st graders are adding up to 20 this year, 2nd graders will be adding within 1000. Knowing their numbers and place value is so critical in these grade levels. A strong math foundation in K-2 helps your child be successful with the everyday math skills we use as adults.
Kindergarteners have been working on shapes and measurement this school year. We are eager to start working with numbers and counting. You can help your child by counting objects at home, or counting to 20 in the car on the way to school.
