SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director
Last week we heard from students through their messages of thanks and learned how much we mean to them. When I read this card from Mackenzie, it seemed funny and sad at that the same time.
"Thank you for the school lunch and breakfast. We all want to say thank you for not burning our food. If you did not work here and we all had to pack our own lunch, some days I would not eat."
You are a familiar, consistent and caring presence in the lives of our students. You have the unique opportunity to see every student every day and nourish them physically and emotionally. You are an important part of the village it takes to raise a child (yes, even teenagers...lol).
With gratitude,
Kathy
Rob's Random Ramblings...
Did you know...
During the 1830s, ketchup was said to have medicinal properties. People thought it would cure diarrhea, indigestion, jaundice and rheumatism.

Congratulations, Nancy Moore!
Twenty five years (and counting!) is a long time to commit to something, but that's exactly how long Nancy Moore has spent feeding generations of Valparaiso students. Nancy is a veteran manager and role model with tons of knowledge to share if you are lucky enough to work with her. She is pictured here with TJM Principal Mark Maudlin and Assistant Principal Lauren Pickett.
Versatile Mushrooms
As we approach grilling season, don't forget to include mushrooms. While they are delicious whole or trimmed, have you ever considered finely chopping mushrooms (with a knife or in a food processor) and adding to ground meat to stretch the recipe? Not only is this a cost savings, it adds flavor and health benefits to your meal. For more great ideas, visit the Mushroom Council's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/MushroomCouncil

From Ashley
We are approaching the end of year rather quickly, can you believe it?!? I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to start getting your kitchens organized and cleaned for the end of year. Little by little you can start to knock items off of the year end cleaning schedule (below) to ease your tasks for the last day. This is a great time to work on getting your storerooms cleaned and organized, organizing and decluttering your desks, going thru file cabinets to rid of any unnecessary papers, removing pass thru shelves and soaking them/cleaning them, removing walk-in shelves and running them through dishmachines. We want to leave our kitchens in tip-top shape! Remember to be labeling the outside of all cases with the exact inventory of product inside. As we move into summer feeding, there are times when we will transfer inventory and it makes all of our lives MUCH easier if we have accurate counts on the outside of open cases!
