Message from the Mill

Students at Puckett’s Mill kicked off the school year on August 5th. We have had a great first week! This year, our theme is IMPACT. Our staff will be working hard to make an IMPACT on our students throughout the year. Teachers began instruction right away on Monday morning while working on getting to know students, setting expectations and developing classroom procedures.

As a reminder, morning car rider will close at 8:10am. Our instructional plan has our students engaged in learning beginning at 8:15am. After 8:10am, we ask that parents park their car and escort their student to the front lobby. Students arriving to the front lobby after 8:15am will need to be checked in by a parent. In order to expedite the morning and afternoon car rider line, we ask that drivers stay in their cars. Please practice with your child at home so that they can independently exit and enter the car. Students should always enter and exit their cars on the passenger side of the car.

Additionally, in order for the school to have a safe and secure dismissal, the latest time to check a student out in the afternoon is 2:15pm.

We will host Curriculum Night on Tuesday, August 20th from 6-7pm. Teachers will send home their grade level presentations for parents to review. On the evening of August 20th, parents are welcome to come to PMES to ask questions, visit partner teachers, and get any additional information about classroom procedures they may need. We encourage all parents to attend to learn about what their students will be accomplishing this year at Puckett's Mill!

If at any time you need to change your student's afternoon transportation, all requests must be submitted in writing using the Transportation Change Request form found on the main page of the school's website BEFORE 10:00 a.m. Faxes and emails will not be accepted.

The completed form should be sent to school with your student and turned in to their teacher when they arrive at school. Thank you for your help to ensure the safety of our students.

A new free/reduced form must be filed each school year. If you were on this program in previous years and plan to continue this year or if your situation has changed due to recent events, you will need to fill out an application. The online application is now available. You will only need to fill out one application for all your children - even if they attend different schools in the Gwinnett County Public School system. You can access the application here.

As the approval process can take up to 10 days, you will want to fill out the application early. This ensures your students will be approved prior to the start of school. You can click here to check the status of your application.

As we work to create an atmosphere where all students feel like they belong, our teachers will spend time in the first few days working on school rules and expectations as well as understanding the perspective of others to help with conflict resolution. While classes are working to build relationships with each other, we ask that parents refrain from having lunch with their students at school until September 3rd.

Parents are welcome to send in with their student or DROP off individual treats for students for birthdays celebrations.. Store bought treats are preferred.

Summer may be over, but we are reading more than ever! By the end of the month, every student will have had an opportunity to visit our School Library Media Center with their class and check out one or more books, depending on their grade level. If you'd like to find more opportunities to expand your child's reading horizons, use these grade level specific summer reading lists all year long to find great authors, series, and topics to explore at home or at the public library. Relay for Life “Jersey Day” is Friday, August 30th!

The safety and security of our students and faculty are of utmost importance. At Puckett’s Mill Elementary, we have a Visitor Management System. This system requires visitors to be buzzed into the school. During normal arrival and dismissal times, the front doors of the school will be open. Once the school day begins, all doors will be locked and visitors will need to press the bell button to gain entry to the school. All visitors will need to present, in hand, a valid ID to be processed through the RAPTOR system to receive a visitor badge. No electronic copies of IDs will be accepted. Visitors should wear the badge in a visible area throughout their time in the building. When visitors are ready to leave, they should exit the school building through the main entrance and officially check out.
