eNewsletter September 2018
Notes from the Principal
From the successes on the playing fields and in the gym, to the successes at band competitions whose season started this past weekend at New Palestine High School, to the successes in the classroom, there are so many great things going on here at East Central.
Academically, EC continues to be a leader in Southeast Indiana from state test scores and school accountability ratings (which we folks will again be proud of as scores are released in the next few weeks), to a teacher-led best practices focus exemplifying a desire to challenge students to ever higher levels year after year. Our FFA and FCCLA continue to shine respectively at both state and national levels in competitions and service. Fall sports are winning on all fronts from cross-country to volleyball. Our football team, specifically, continues to roll maintaining a state ranking of either #1 or #2 in the Indiana Coaches Poll every week so far this season.
Homecoming was a success from school-spirit activities, to the pie I "recieved" at the pep session, to the crowing of Homecoming King and Queen, Steve Doll and Natalie Kuhn.
We're in the midst of CollegeGoWeek while still pursuing philanthropic activities as AOK Club collects funds and supplies for those in need in North and South Carolina. All of our first period classes are competing to see who can bring in the most.
It's been a great start in so many ways. A big thanks goes out to staff, students, and community for making me feel so welcome!
Tom Black
National Merit Scholar Finalist
Also congratulations to Luke Disbro, Jenna Doll, Molly Graham, Jared Tiemann, and Isaac Toney for receiving Commended status which means they scored in the top 34000 out of more than 1.6 million students entered. Although they are no longer eligible to compete for National Merit Scholarships, they represent a valuable national resource and we should encourage and support them as they continue their educational journeys.
Notes from Guidance
The Guidance Department has been very busy getting the senior class of 2019 ready for the application process for colleges, technical schools, community colleges, apprenticeship programs and military. We have also been communicating with the students in classroom presentations and through email. New this year for the Guidance department is our ability to email parents by grade level through school messenger. Our goal this year is to increase communication with parents, and we feel that we are making great strides in this process. As always, we encourage students and parents to contact us with questions or concerns.

Notes from Mrs. Rosfeld; Curriculum and Testing
ECHS Parents and Students,
Although we do not have fall parent-teacher conferences at the high school level, we would like to ensure you know how to get help for your child. As the end of the 1st Quarter draws near, we want to make sure you know the academic success resources available to ECHS students:
1. Student-Teacher Communication:
If your child has questions or is not understanding class material, please encourage discussions with the classroom teacher. A follow-up email from you to the teacher is always appreciated! This ensures that a conversation between the child and teacher is happening.
2. Parent-Teacher Communication:
We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions about a class, please do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher. If you are emailing a teacher, it is also helpful to cc your child's school counselor. Teachers can give you specific insights related to your child (i.e. organization, helpful study techniques, web resources, etc.). Teacher and Counselor email addresses are available on the school website and also on pages 17-19 of the student handbook: http://echs.sunmandearborn.k12.in.us/.
Power School: Updated grades are viewable via the the parent portal of Power School. Checking specific grades will help you understand how the final grade is being calculated. If you need your Power School information, please contact the office at 812-576-4811 x11915.
3. Extra Assistance Before or After School:
Students should check with their teachers if they feel extra assistance is needed. Teachers arrive daily at 7:30 and could possibly help before or after school.
National Honor Society Tutoring is set up in the ECHS Library every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4 p.m. No reservation is required.
If students have a study hall, students can ask their counselor to set up peer tutoring 2-3 days a week during that time. In addition, our study hall monitor, Mrs. Krummen is willing to do "Grade Checks" with students.
4. Online Resources:
Each subject has specific tools and resources available to students. Each course has a Google Classroom set up by the teacher. If you would like access, you may reach out to the classroom teacher. In addition, students report high success with the use of KhanAcademy.org (completely free online educational videos in all core classes) and AskRose.org (offers free homework help in math and science).
Education is a team effort! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Educationally,
Mrs. Rosfeld

Ag Press Release
East Central Sophomore to Compete at National FFA Convention
DATELINE (September 28, 2018/National FFA Organization) – A member from the East Central FFA Chapter will be competing for national recognition in a career development event at the 90th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Oct. 25-28.
Kayla Miles, a sophomore at East Central High School will vie for national honors with nearly 50 FFA members from across the United States in the FFA Creed speaking CDE. The National FFA Foundation and The National FFA Organization sponsor the event. Kayla is the daughter of Tim and Paula Miles of Sunman.
Creed speaking is one of 25 career/leadership development event areas, covering jobs skills in everything from communications to mechanics. The Creed Speaking CDE is designed solely for members who qualified while in the seventh, eighth or ninth grade. The outstanding FFA members are recognized for their ability to memorize and present the FFA Creed then answer questions on the meaning and purpose of the Creed. CDEs and LDEs help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.
The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 649,355 student members who belong to one of 7,859 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization is also supported by 225,891 alumni members in 1,934 alumni chapters throughout the U.S.
EC FFA attends District Kickoff
32 members from the East Central FFA attended the District 12 Kickoff at South Ripley High School on Monday, September 24th. They all had the chance to meet other members in their district, as well as district and state officers. Many fun games and team building activities were played during the kickoff.
Business
During the month of September, students in the Business Department have embarked on many projects. Mr. Clause is teaching our accounting students the basics of accounting and using the Microsoft Excel 2016 program, when accounting software programs are not available. Many students have learned how to input formulas and calculate debits and credits by manually entering the math formulas instead of an auto calculation that is pre-programmed by many industry accounting software programs.
Mrs. Hutzel is still helping the ECHS Drop Zone manage the seven day period with student drop offs and deliveries. This system seems to be working without a hitch, and the amount of business has dropped off significantly since the first two weeks of school. This is a good thing, meaning that the chrome books are working, and the students are taking care of their business in the classroom. In addition to this, we have included a graphic of the new ECHS Drop Zone logo. This logo will be used interchangeably with different colors. This new logo will be appearing in correspondence, on the ECHS Drop Zone badges, and over the ECHS Drop Zone window outside of Mrs. Hutzel’s classroom.
On Friday, September 28, 2018, the City of Lawrenceburg and Lawrenceburg Municipal Utilities hosted the Whiskey City Rodeo. Besides the Friday night bull riding expo, the rodeo brought in many experts in various trades. Included in the event were teams from across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and the American Samoa. Mr. Clause and Mrs. Pettit accompanied 60 Preparation for College and Career Students on this field trip. They watched as the journeyman from all over the country compete in timed events, including an event where lineman had to climb an electrical pole to save an injured co-worker (mannequin). Two professionals from the industry talked to our students regarding their apprenticeship opportunities, career opportunities, salary, and giving back to the community at the workplace. Included with this article are pictures of that event.
Mrs. Pettit along with the students from The Trojan Exchange have ordered some new items for the store. The store will be set up for business at the October 12, 2018 varsity football game against Beach Grove. Look for The Trojan Exchange Cart located right behind the home side ticket booth. Stop by and check out the new t-shirts and hats. The store is open Monday through Thursday during A-B & C lunches. The Trojan Exchange is closed on Fridays. Thank you for your support.
Engineering/PLTW
Students in the PLTW Civil Engineering & Architecture / Ivy Tech Design 105 class are shown using available tools and materials to complete their architectural features models. After learning about the history of civil engineering and architecture, students will be studying residential and commercial architecture. Major projects will include designing an affordable single family home that meets the requirements for Homes for Habitat and designing a community library from an existing abandoned property.
English
Several members of the East Central English department compete on a trivia team called the ECHS Lit Squad. Formed in the spring of 2018, we compete on Thursday nights at 13 Below in Saylor Park, Ohio. Although we are a young team and new to the trivia world, we have enjoyed some success. With several second and third place finishes under our belts, we are hungry for that elusive first place win. Recently we enlisted the help of Mr. Joe Lamb (EC biology & chemistry teacher), who came highly recommended by his students for his trivia skill. He did not disappoint. Even though we don’t always win, we ALWAYS learn something new and ALWAYS have fun!

The Intro to Fashion and Textiles students completed a unit on the elements and principles of design. While studying the unit students learned how to tie dye and draw their own fashion designs. The students are currently learning how to operate the sewing machine and will begin sewing their pajama pants for their Fashion Show on November 4th.
Education Professions
The students in Education Professions Program have been doing an exceptional job assisting in the elementary and middle school classrooms. The ‘Cadet Teachers’ have the opportunity to experience firsthand through this class how to manage a classroom, work with students and develop skills needed to be a future teacher. They are currently studying “Who are Today’s Teachers?” And “What are Today’s Schools like?” The Education Professions I Class is a dual college credit class with Ivy Tech.
Congratulations to Mrs. Osman!
Mrs. Brenda Osman received the Carl D. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the beauty of the Hispanic culture and of the influence and and contributions Hispanic culture has made with its presence in the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration that begins on September 15th and ends October 15th. September 15th is significant because it is the independence day for several Latin American countries like Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. Columbus Day is also celebrated on October 12th; however, in the United States it is always recognized on the second Monday on October. Spanish classes at EC are celebrating Hispanic Heritage by learning about tradition, food, music, dance, and important figures such as artists, singers, athletes, etc. along with the incredible architecture and landscapes of 21 Hispanic countries.
Math
As promised this month the Math Department would like to introduce and showcase Mr. Moorman and Mr. Harris.
Mr. Moorman teaches AP Prob-Stats, Pre-Cal/Trig, and Pre-Cal/Trig Honors. Mr. Moorman also coaches at the Sunman Dearborn Middle School. He coaches Cross Country, Girls Basketball, and Track. Mr. Moorman also spends a lot of time in the summer working with some of our students as they work hard to maintain our fine campus and the busses. Mr. Moorman is always ready to help students with their homework and encourages them to strive to do their best.
Mr. Harris teaches Algebra I, Algebra II, and Math 10. He also does an excellent job as a Football Coach, Track Coach, and Driving Instructor for S&B! Mr. Harris recently returned to the classroom and we are happy to have him back in our hallway. He works hard to get his students prepared for the ISTEP and to move on to their next mathematical endeavor! Welcome Back Mr. Harris!!
Stay tuned for next month: Mrs. Bovard and Mr. Bentley!
Music
The chorus department will present their fall concert on Sunday, Sept. 30th at 3:00p. The concert will feature selections performed by the Women’s, Show and Concert Choir. The music performed will range from classical, pop, country and multicultural.
Congratulations to Jared Tiemann, Kerala Carter, Noah Blankmand and Maggie Ravenna for being accepted into the 2019 All-State Choir. These students had to compete against students from our district to be accepted into the choir. They will be performing at the IMEA convention in January. So proud of their accomplishment.

The boys and girls physical education classes have been focusing on fall fitness testing to find out their current fitness levels. Students then come up with fitness goals that they want to achieve by the end of the year. We hope all of our students reach a healthy fitness zone and continue to stay active throughout their lives. We offer activities such as strength training and yoga that are benefical both physically and mentally.
Science
Tim Maluvac - tmaluvac@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
There is a myriad of activity going on in the science department! It is so astonishing to think that the students in our classrooms today will be future scientists creating alternative fuels, nanotechnologies, biotechnologies that create body parts, and even discovering preventative cures for diseases! Here is a brief summary of what is going on in each science class.
AP Biology students are completing an enzyme catalysis lab. In this 4-day lab, students are studying the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using the enzyme catalase. Various environmental factors (like heat) can alter the shape of the enzyme so it is unable to decompose the hydrogen peroxide. Students then test the factors that deactivate the enzymes.
Botany & Zoology students are working with various members of the Kingdom Protista and Fungi. Besides examining the organism’s structures, they will also look at the environmental conditions that the organisms inhabit.
ECHO Club meets every Thursday after school in Mrs. Burkhard’s room to discuss environmental issues and then to gather all the recycling from the school. All are welcome!
Biology classes are studying biochemistry and energy transfer. Students are actively creating chemical reactions in the lab and analyzing causation of these reactions. Other labs have students testing breakfast foods for macromolecules. Students are also conducting a lipid lab determining if substances are hydrophilic or hydrophobic.
Anatomy & Physiology and Biology 2 students are learning the incredible diversity in cellular structures and how each organelle contributes to the life of each cell. Also, the processes of heredity in various life forms are being examined and predicted based on observations of characteristics.
GERMAN Club is planning their trip on September 26th to the Hofbrauhaus restaurant to enjoy the full German cultural experience!
Earth science students are discovering the formation and properties of rocks and minerals used in daily life. By identifying distinct rock layers, students can determine relative and absolute ages of a geological sample.
Physics & Integrated Chem/Phys classes are being introduced to velocity and acceleration and the relationship between them. These concepts create the foundation for Newton’s Laws.
Chemistry 1 students are investigating the history of the atom. They are simulating the discovery of the nucleus of the atom. Students are also being introduced to mole conversion problems.
Chemistry 2 classes are finding formulas of a hydrate using quantitative analysis.
AP Chemistry students are finding concentration of an unknown solution during their Solutions and Titrations lab. If done correctly, these titrations will yield precise results for further calculations.Social Studies
Economics students will soon begin competing in the Indiana Stock Market Program. Using actual data from the stock markets, teams of students are given a hypothetical $100,000 to create and manage a portfolio of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Before they know it, students are learning about financial markets such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), understanding the basics of personal investing and enhancing skills learned in math, reading, and technology.
The competition lasts approximately 10 weeks and offers the added incentive of cash prizes to the top groups around the state of Indiana.
