MARCH 6, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
We have had a positive and productive week at SLPHS with students and staff working together to end the trimester on a high note. It has been a good week, and I appreciate all the parents who reinforced the importance of finishing strong.
The trimester concludes tomorrow for students. Our staff will work on reporting student progress on Friday. Trimester II grades will be available in Campus Parent Portal on March 25. Our spring break starts on Friday. Remember there is no school for students March 8-18. We’ll see students back at school Tuesday, March 19.
Having said that, we will have a school full of students over spring break. We are hosting the Minnesota High School League State Math competition. Our SLPHS Mathletes have advanced to the state meet and will compete on their home turf! Meanwhile, our boys’ basketball team has a chance to play beyond this weekend. If they win tonight at Mounds View, they will play Park Center in the section finals on Friday and the opportunity to represent SLP schools at the state tournament. Congrats to our Mathletes and all our winter athletes and activity participants.
I hope all our students, staff, and families are able to rejuvenate over spring break and return ready to energetically reengage in learning throughout trimester 3. Thank you as always for your ongoing support and partnership. One school, one community, SLPPantherProud!

The Panthinators
The Spring Lake Park High School Robotics team – The Panthinators – are back and better than ever! Made up of four teams - building, coding, business and drive - this student-led group is hard at work designing a robot prototype to enter in a 60-team competition at the beginning of April. Implementing advanced software technology and swerve driving, the group is excited to see if the robot gets them a seat at the table during competition season.
Spring Lake Park High School Local Scholarship
The Spring Lake Park High School Local Scholarship application will open on Friday, March 8 and will CLOSE on Sunday, March 24. To be eligible for a scholarship, your student must complete the application.
To access the application, your student must log into Naviance and locate the application: Top right corner, click on student’s initials, select surveys from your school. Detailed instructions will be sent to all students.
Last year, local businesses and community members donated more than $72,000 to fund scholarship for members of our graduating class. Scholarship funds support students in their next steps, provide visibility to local businesses and create lasting community connections.
Scholarships are awarded to students based on: grade point average (minimum of 2.75 is required), course rigor, school/community involvement and a student’s essay. Recipients are chosen by the local scholarship committee based on each scholarship's criteria.
The power of morning meetings
In Brooke Esselman’s classroom every Friday morning, you’ll find a group of energetic and barefoot first graders in a circle around an assortment of shoes. As part of their Morning Meeting, the class is preparing for the shoe greeting. They put one of their shoes in the center of the circle and hide the other behind their back. The goal? Take turns guessing whose shoe belongs to who as they greet another member of the class.
Students in grades PreK-6 start each day with a morning meeting to create community in the classroom. Students greet each other, spend time sharing and often discuss a specific topic like kindness, teamwork, or empathy. This time each day helps create a sense of belonging and sets the tone for the day of learning.
Through intentional planning, teachers create a climate of trust, community, respect and engagement, allowing students to feel valued and supported while honing essential life skills. Teachers tailor each meeting specific to the needs and interests within their classroom.
