The Call
Sept 23-27, 2024
Dear Colin Powell Academy Families,
I writing to share that our students (K-8) will soon complete their Fall i-Ready® Diagnostic Assessment. This innovative online assessment will focus on reading, providing us with a valuable tool to support your child’s academic growth.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that helps us pinpoint your child’s strengths and areas for improvement in key skills. Following the diagnostic, the program tailors individualized instruction based on each student's unique needs, helping teachers better support their learning journey.
Here are some of the skill areas that i-Ready Diagnostic & Instruction will assess and teach:
Reading:
- Phonological Awareness
- Phonics
- High-Frequency Words
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
The personalized instruction your child will receive through i-Ready® is designed to be both engaging and effective, helping them grow at their own pace while ensuring they master essential skills. Teachers will regularly monitor your child’s progress and adjust instruction to ensure each student’s needs are being met.
We believe this program will be a valuable addition to our school’s efforts to support academic success for every student. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of taking their time during the assessments and doing their best.
Should you have any questions about i-Ready® or how it will be used in your child’s classroom, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher , Mrs. Berrett, Testing Coordinator (Marie.Berrett@pgcps.org), Mrs. Jackson, Reading Specialist (Annette2.Jackson@pgcps.org , 3-5), Mrs. Detky, Reading Resource (Amber.Detky@pgcps.org , K-2) and Mrs Orbita, Reading ILT (Deanna.Orbita@pgcps.org , 6-8) .
Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to ensure a successful year of learning.
Ms. Lattimore, Principal

Dear Colin Powell Academy Families,
We moved to Colin Powell Academy on November 28, 2023, and in those first seven months, our school community demonstrated great respect for the school environment, with minor incidents of vandalism or destruction of property.
However, I am disappointed to share that recently, we have experienced instances where some students have not upheld the same level of respect for our school property (throwing trash, poor restroom etiquette, and etching pencil marks on classroom floors). These acts of vandalism and mistreatment are deeply troubling and do not reflect the values we strive to instill in our students.
I kindly ask that you speak with your child about the importance of their behavior both inside and outside of school.
A key part of their growth and learning is understanding how to respect our school community and the property we all share. Destructive actions not only harm the environment where they learn but also impact their peers' experiences. Please be aware that any actions that impede the learning environment or damage school property will result in serious consequences, including in-school or out-of-school suspension.
We are here to support your child’s education and development, and I appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these expectations.
Sincerely ,
Ms. Lattimore,
Principal

CPA Car Riders & Walkers
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We understand that our car rider dismissal line can be lengthy. To help expedite the process, we kindly ask that all families display their car number tag clearly. Your child will be escorted to your vehicle promptly. Please note that parking along Fort Washington Road and showing your tag at the front door is not permitted.
To ensure our dismissal process runs smoothly, we need your consistent support.
For the week of September 23-28, 2024
- Car riders will be dismissed at 3:00 PM.
- Walkers will be dismissed at 3:10PM.
Parents of walkers, please meet your child at the steps alongside Fort Washington Road. If a parent is not present for PreK-2 students, we will escort your child back to the main office.
We also ask that you do not call your child and instruct them to walk off school grounds to meet you. This is a significant safety concern and disrupts our dismissal procedures.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
