ETHNIC STUDIES IMPLEMENTATION INFORMATION📖
We are excited to announce a new academic offering for the upcoming school year: Ethnic Studies. This course will be available to high school students as part of our expanding social studies curriculum.
What is Ethnic Studies?
Learning about different cultures and histories often left out of regular classes
Understanding experiences of diverse groups and challenging stereotypes
Exploring how race, gender, and class shape people's lives and society
Discovering often-overlooked contributions of people from various backgrounds
Developing skills to engage positively in our diverse world
What Ethnic Studies is not:
Intended to demonize or shame any one group of people
To promote one opinion or political idea
Implementation Timeline:
Requirement is for at least a one-semester course
Graduation Requirement takes effect for the graduating class of 2029–30
Districts must begin offering the course by the 2025–26 school year
The course is currently in development, and we want to ensure you are informed throughout the planning process. Our curriculum team is working to create engaging content that will enhance students' understanding of diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives.
We value community input in shaping this educational opportunity. You can expect monthly updates about the course development in this newsletter, including:

WPUSD'S PORTRAIT OF A LEARNER🎓
What is a Portrait of a Learner?
Imagine a world where every child develops the essential skills they need to become successful adults. With your help, we've identified these very skills, and we are excited to share them with you today. You may have already noticed these traits around campus, or perhaps your child has already mentioned them to you!
As we bring our entire community together to help our young learners grow into successful adults, we would love your support in embracing this initiative. Share the graphic and video linked below with family, co-workers, sports coaches, and more! Our vision is for WPUSD's Portrait of a Learner to become common knowledge beyond the classroom. As this initiative progresses, students will learn and demonstrate these traits, leaving Western Placer schools with a tangible portfolio they can use when applying to colleges, interviewing for jobs, and incorporating into their daily lives.
We are just scratching the surface of our Portrait of a Learner rollout, and we hope you will help us build awareness! You can find more information on our website HERE.
SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE SOCIAL MEDIA USE 🤳
Social media can connect friends and family but poses risks, especially for children and adolescents. While some benefits exist (e.g., access to information, friends, an outlet for self-expression), available research suggests that the risks are more significant. Such risks may include but are not limited to: impaired sleep, cyberbullying, increased risk of anxiety and depression, body image issues, and exposure to extreme, harmful, and/or inappropriate content*.

PLATEFUL NEWS! 🥝
Can I have a bowl of cereal?
We’re excited to share that our primary schools are expanding their breakfast offerings with bulk cereal from Nature's Path! After a successful pilot at TBE and FSS, we’re thrilled to offer this nutritious, gluten-free cereal at more schools in the coming months. Available in two tasty flavors—Chocolate and Cinnamon—each serving contains only 6 grams of sugar, giving students a healthier start to their day.
Expansion Schedule:
- Starting December 4th: SLE, LCE, COES
- Starting January 8th: FRE, SES, CCC
This switch also supports our sustainability efforts by reducing single-use packaging. We can’t wait to roll this out to more schools and give students a delicious and nutritious option to fuel their mornings!
