A Look Back At October
"Looking Back" – A Transformative Experience for Our Community
The recent in-school performances and evening showing of our 22nd Annual Adolescent Issues Play, "Looking Back", were nothing short of extraordinary. Every student at Gelinas Junior High School had the privilege of attending this powerful production during the school day, while families and community members gathered for the evening performance to witness the incredible work of our talented cast and crew.
The play offered a deeply reflective narrative, encouraging students to examine how the choices they make today can shape their future. It was a transformative experience, sparking meaningful conversations about self-awareness, and the far-reaching impact of the decisions made during adolescence. Many students walked away with a renewed sense of purpose and accountability.
The success of "Looking Back" is a testament to the dedication and creativity of the entire team. Mr. DePersio, the director, brought the vision to life with his expert guidance, ensuring each scene resonated with authenticity and impact. Mr. Rieckhoff, the talented writer and stage crew leader, crafted a thoughtful, engaging script that made complex issues relatable and accessible for students, while also managing the behind-the-scenes magic. Finally, Mr. Milillo’s impeccable lighting design added depth to every moment on stage, heightening the audience’s experience.
We are incredibly proud of our students who devoted themselves to their roles, both on stage and behind the scenes. Their hard work and passion were evident in every line delivered and every cue hit. The professionalism and heart they displayed were remarkable, and they truly embodied the spirit of teamwork and dedication.
Thank you to everyone involved in making "Looking Back" such a memorable and transformative experience. This production will surely leave a lasting impact on our students and the community as a whole. We can’t wait to see what future performances hold!
Fishing Trip
Over 40 ninth-grade students from Gelinas Junior High School took part in the annual fishing trip organized by the school’s Science Department. The adventure began with a four-hour journey aboard the Celtic Quest, setting off from Port Jefferson into the Long Island Sound. Students had a fantastic time, with many catching fish for the very first time. They reeled in several species, including porgy (scup), black sea bass, bluefish, and oyster toadfish. The crew expertly cleaned the catch, allowing all students to take home some fish for dinner.
To enhance their experience, students were enrolled in a Google Classroom that provided information about local fish species, along with recipes and insights into the unique ecosystem of the Long Island Sound.
National Day on Writing
On Friday, 10/18, the students at Gelinas Junior High School celebrated the power of the written word for National Day on Writing. During English class, students took part in activities that highlighted the importance of writing in our daily lives. This opportunity allowed our students to see writing as more than just an academic task. It was celebrated with a celebration of creativity, self-expression, and communication. Students left inspired, seeing the joy and passion that writing can inspire!

Ms. Mannino's "Fun Friday" Review Game
As part of our "Fun Friday" activities, students in our Sign Language class recently played an exciting review game called "Attack the Ghosts." In this game, students work in teams to answer questions related to the current unit's vocabulary. When a team answers correctly, they get to "attack" another team's ghost. The last ghost standing wins!
This activity was not only a great way to review vocabulary, but it also encouraged teamwork and strategic thinking. The students had a blast while reinforcing their learning, making it a hit in the classroom!
Mr. Worthington's Ninth Grade Social Studies Class
Mr. Worthington and Ms. Connelly introduced a project centered around the Earthshot contest. This initiative encourages students to develop their civic participation skills while working on innovative solutions for environmental challenges. Not only will this project enhance their learning experience, but it will also count toward earning credit for the Seal of Civic Readiness. We love seeing our students ready to make a positive impact!
Mrs. Chase's Ninth Grade World History Class
On October 16th, Ms. Chase's 9th grade World History students experienced hierarchical and egalitarian relationships today while exploring different theories of social organization from the Neolithic period. Through a fun juggling metaphor, they discovered that collaborative models are often the most enjoyable—a perfect lesson for Unity Day!
Earth Science Mineral Lab
Students in Earth Science classes are diving into the fascinating world of minerals through an engaging, inquiry-based Mineral Lab. This hands-on activity features eight distinct stations, each focusing on a different property of minerals. At each station, students identified unique characteristics, such as: color, streak, luster, hardness, specific gravity, and density. They also explore special properties like acid reactions and fluorescence, providing a comprehensive understanding of mineral identification.
After completing the lab, students will apply their newfound knowledge to identify unknown mineral samples, reinforcing their understanding of Earth materials, as well as the importance of mineral resources. This interactive experience not only enhances their learning but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the Earth's geological wonders.
Mr. Ferland's 7th Grade Technology class
Students in Mr. Ferland's 7th Grade Technology class have been learning about tools and machines. After learning about drill press safety, and how to properly operate a drill press, students drilled the holes for the axles on their Rubber Band Car Project.
Fright Club
During the month of October, seventh grade English classes participated in a creative writing contest called Fright Club sponsored by the company Young Writers USA. Ms. Matedero's Volleyball Team
We are excited to welcome Ms. Matedero, a new face at Gelinas but a familiar one in the Three Village community! With four years of teaching experience at Ward Melville High School, Ms. Matedero has taught courses such as Algebra 2, College Algebra, and AP Computer Science Principles. She’s thoroughly enjoyed her start in a new building and has been delighted by how friendly everyone has been. She also loves how naturally curious her students are about learning.
Outside the classroom, Ms. Matedero is no stranger to Gelinas, as she’s been coaching the girls volleyball team here for four years. She has also coached at the JV and Varsity levels at Ward Melville. When she’s not teaching or coaching, you can find her staying active, living a healthy lifestyle, or relaxing at the beach. Student Spotlight
At Gelinas Junior High, student leadership is key to fostering a vibrant school community. This month, we’re proud to introduce Ryan Gitto and Theodore Fiore-Rosenfeld, our 8th and 9th Grade Student Government Presidents. These two student leaders are working hard to make a difference, and their passion for serving the school shines through.
Ryan Gitto, 8th Grade President
Ryan has been dedicated to building connections at Gelinas, especially through his role managing the girls' basketball team, where he assists with practices, runs the scoreboard, and keeps the book for games. He also served as co-vice president in 7th grade, and now, as president, he’s excited to help create change and encourage student participation in Student Government events. When asked what he loves most about Gelinas, Ryan immediately highlighted how open teachers are to helping students and the large variety of clubs the school offers. When he’s not dedicating his time to Gelinas, you can find Ryan out sailing.
Theodore Fiore-Rosenfeld, 9th Grade President
Theodore’s journey in Student Government began in 8th grade. He joined with the belief that participating in clubs would make him a well-rounded student. However, he quickly discovered that Student Government was something he was extremely passionate about. Theodore looks forward to influencing school policies and leading successful events this year. When asked what makes Gelinas special, he praised the pride our staff has for keeping the school in pristine shape, creating an environment where students can focus on learning. Outside of his leadership duties, Theodore enjoys discussing politics, history, and government—his favorite subjects.
Both Ryan and Theodore are eager to lead their peers and create lasting impacts on Gelinas this year. With their commitment and enthusiasm, we know they’ll make this school year one to remember!
