New SISD School Resource Officer
When students arrive at Sherman High School to start their day, the first person they see might be Officer Tom Caver, the district’s new school resource officer. Caver is a veteran Sherman Police Officer who now serves as a full-time SRO at Sherman High School. His new, permanent, role started in August and has been a positive addition to the campus. During Monday night’s board meeting, Caver was introduced to the community. Meeting attendees viewed a video that featured Officer Caver in action at Sherman High School and listened to Caver speak about his new full time responsibility with Sherman ISD.
“This is new for all of us and the SHS administrators and teachers have opened up their family to me,” Caver said. “I get to impact the young lives here and it’s an amazing and rewarding feeling that I get to see change and change mindsets.”
Sherman High School Principal Jenifer Politi believes that his presence on campus makes students and staff feel safe.
“We are so glad to have a dedicated SRO on our campus this year,” she said. “He has built wonderful relationships with our faculty, our students and our staff and genuinely loves what he does.”
Brett Counce, SISD Safety and Security Director, said the program is beneficial for the entire district.
“The SRO is an integral part of the campus team and any person in that role must take a genuine interest in relationship development with students and staff, Counce said. “Officer Caver has done that and has been able to step in and help diffuse several situations this year. Having him a part of our team allows us to get things handled quickly.”
The mission of the SRO Program is to foster a positive relationship and rapport with students as well as reduce and prevent school-related violence and crimes committed by juveniles and young adults. The program accomplishes this mission by having an assigned officer on SISD school facilities to assist with creating and maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment.
“With a police officer here, I feel more secure,” Sherman High School Senior, Ja’Coya Birdow expressed. “I don’t have to worry about fights happening because there is always a police officer here that you can talk to.”
Sherman High School Senior, Drew Staggs echoed the same sentiments.
“Safety is really important to my overall well-being,” he said. “Whenever I get to school I don’t really have to think about it anymore because I feel like the SRO on campus is doing a good job and keeping me and my friends safe.”
Caver says his job is to ensure that students can attend school to learn and not worry about their safety at all.
“I come to work every day to make sure this campus is safe and secure,” he said. “I love seeing their smiling faces and it is a great feeling to build a safe learning environment.”
The New Sherman High School Courtyard
As we move further along with the construction of the new Sherman High School, additional designs for the campus building’s landscaping are being finalized. Final designs for the school's courtyard landscaping were presented to the board on Monday night.
The vision for the courtyard is to create a safe, flexible, and vibrant outdoor space for the students and faculty of Sherman High School that will serve as a focal point and showpiece of the culture of the new SHS. The courtyard area will remain locked during normal school hours, will accommodate many different activities at the same time, and the design is fresh and modern with an asymmetrical loop walk that ties all of the different spaces together.
YOU'RE INVITED TO THE NEW SHERMAN HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY!
With the excitement of the start of construction on the new Sherman High School, the district is preparing to celebrate the momentous occasion. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sherman High School will be held on October 1, 2018 at 6pm at the construction site, located at Steeplechase Dr. and FM 1417. The entire community is invited to the groundbreaking event and we look forward to seeing all of the Sherman ISD employees there.

1. Flipgrid
At a time when we are all getting less and less comfortable with face-to-face communication, preferring instead to talk through text, Flipgrid gives us a way to bring our real voices, our actual faces, our true, less-edited selves back into play.
2. InsertLearning
InsertLearning, formerly called DocentEDU, is an extension you add to your Chrome browser. Once it’s there, turning any web page into a lesson can be done in minutes.
3. Book Creator
Book Creator really could work for any age level and in any content area: Students can create books to show how a key science concept impacts their daily lives, explore a social justice issue throughout history, study examples of math principles at work in the real world, or craft an original, illustrated story.
4. NewseumED
The site gives you several ways to search for content—by state, century, theme, topics, type of resource, and so on. Once you find something you’d like your students to use—a map, a newspaper, a quiz—you can share it with them using a URL that lasts for two weeks but can be renewed an unlimited number of times.
5. AutoDraw
If you have early finishers in class or need something fresh for preferred activity time, giving students ten minutes to play around on AutoDraw would be great.
6. Sway
Microsoft has quietly introduced Sway, a unique platform that gives you dynamic, almost cinematic presentations that have the feel of a modern website.Click here for additional information.
