Book Fair Week at Parkview!
Hereβs a breakdown of the support:
PTSA Volunteer Co-Chairs and Parkview's Director of Community Engagement partnered to prepare for this wonderful event. The fabulous co-chairs, Michelle Ginther and Ayanna Hagness Duren, led the volunteer effort every day this week. Thank you!
Parkview Staff ensured that Book Fair classroom visits and student volunteer opportunities fit into busy schedules and teamed up with parent volunteers to support students during their experience at the fair.
16 Parent Volunteers worked the registers and answered questions, including whether we had a student's Wish List book or pen in stock. Many of these volunteers committed to multiple shifts!
1 RAHS Student Volunteer returned to help with the Book Fair, and we LOVE seeing Parkview students continuing to give back!
52 Student Volunteers from grades 6, 7, and 8 signed up to help with the fair, with teacher approval. These middle school students have been BRILLIANT!
Book Fair Buddy Classes from grades 4, 5, and 6 assisted every kindergarten and 1st-grade class in making wish lists, calculating sales tax, and purchasing items at the fair.
The goal of the Book Fair is simple: to get more books into the hands of Parkview students. We achieve this in two meaningful ways. First, students have the chance to discover and purchase wonderful books for home. Then, the PTSA uses the proceeds to support teachers and the Media Center by providing more books to share with students.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Book Fair through volunteering and/or purchasing items. Your contributions have made this week truly wonderful!

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
Pertussis (also called whooping cough) has been reported among students at Parkview and in our community.
What is Pertussis? Pertussis can be a serious bacterial illness. It may begin with:
- A runny nose
- Sneezing
- Mild cough
- Possibly a low-grade fever
After 1 or 2 weeks, the cough worsens and begins to occur in sudden, uncontrollable bursts. These coughing attacks can end in:
- Vomiting
- A high-pitched whooping noise
Coughing attacks often happen at night. Older children and adults may have a less typical cough. The cough can continue for up to 3 months.
When to Stay Home | Persons with pertussis should not go to school, work, or any activities until they have finished 5 days of antibiotic treatment, unless they have already been coughing for 3 or more weeks. Although the cough can last longer than 3 weeks, a person is no longer contagious after the third week.
Risks to Others | Pertussis can be less severe in adults and older children but can be easily passed on to infants, who may become very ill.
What to Do If Youβre Affected | If you or your child have a cough and have had contact with someone with pertussis or have been coughing for 7 days or longer, discuss pertussis with your healthcare provider.
Vaccination Awareness | Most children have been vaccinated for pertussis, but protection can decrease over time. People who have completed some or all of the recommended vaccinations may still get pertussis but will generally have a milder illness. Now is a good time to make sure you are up to date on your pertussis vaccines.
Resources | For information on accessing immunization records, visit Find My Immunization Record. More information on pertussis can be found at Pertussis (Whooping Cough).
Questions? | Questions can be directed to the Parkview Health Office at (651) 487-4365 or the Minnesota Department of Health at 1-877-676-5414.
