News & Announcements
From us to you, we are sending wishes for a warm and wonderful holiday season.
Congratulations to Cumberland Valley High School students Tamsila Hameed, Kiera Fritz Weikel, Madeline Oswald, and Wiktor Mroczkowski, whose photography was selected to appear on this year's district holiday card. The students are part of Mr. Shaun Bollinger's photography class and club.
Inclement Weather Schedules (Flexible Instruction Days & 2-Hour Delays)
Cumberland Valley School District was again approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to utilize up to five Flexible Instruction Days (FID) for inclement weather.
As we did last year, the District will plan to follow either a 2-hour delay schedule or a Flexible Instruction Day during inclement weather, unless otherwise noted in our automated message. Should inclement weather be forecast after students have already arrived for the day, there may be a need for an unscheduled early dismissal. It is important that you listen to any message in its entirety to be certain of the schedule for that day.
2-HOUR DELAY SCHEDULE: In the event of inclement weather, the District may need to use a delayed opening (with modified kindergarten) schedule. The 2-hour delay schedule by building is listed on our website - www.cvschools.org/BTSresources > Scroll down the page to “Schedules by Building (including 2-hour delay schedules).”
FLEXIBLE INSTRUCTION DAY (FID): During Flexible Instruction Days (remote learning), students will receive learning activities and assignments at home to provide continuity of instruction. On these days, families should look for communication from principals and/or teachers regarding specific school and class schedules for the day.
Should we require more than five days of closure due to weather, the District would likely add additional days to the calendar and plan to make up these days during scheduled holiday breaks or at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.
COMMUNICATION REGARDING INCLEMENT WEATHER: The District maintains a variety of ways to communicate delays, cancellations, and closings to our community and staff. Once a decision is made, notification generally begins within about 15 minutes. Current notification systems include:
District website (www.cvschools.org)
Automated calling & text alert system (For parents/guardians and staff only - you must register to receive text alerts.)
Email blasts (For parents/guardians only based upon email address(es) provided in Skyward.)
Twitter (@CVSDnews) and Facebook (facebook.com/CVschools)
Media (if time permits and typically only in cases of unscheduled early dismissals)
Please ensure that contact information - to include both home contacts and emergency contacts - for your child(ren) is up-to-date in Skyward as this is what is used to reach families in the event of an emergency, a change in schedule due to weather, transportation delays, etc. You can make changes to this information as needed throughout the school year.
If there is ever a time that you do not receive a phone call or text message, but you think there is a chance of a delay/closure, please check our website or official district social media accounts. Barring any major outage, our website is the first place that we update.
Eagles Around the District
Top left: Mrs. Houston's third-grade class at Hampden Elementary School embarked on a sweet adventure, building Colosseums with marshmallows and toothpicks. The project was inspired by their CKLA unit about Ancient Roman Civilization and showcased their architectural ingenuity, alongside their problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Top center: Silver Spring Elementary School hosted a special Deck the Halls with Confidence celebration earlier this week. As part of the project, students reflected on the question, "What are you most proud of so far this school year?" Their answers were written onto a sheet of paper, which was woven into a beautiful, 283-foot-long confidence chain that is on display throughout the school.
Top right: Mrs. Deremer's fifth-grade students recently read books to some of our littlest eagles in Mrs. Fraser's kindergarten class at Sporting Hill Elementary School. This is such a great opportunity for our older students to model their love of reading.
Bottom left: Mountain View Middle School recently celebrated seventh-grade reading teacher and team leader, Mrs. Gieseler, for her selection as the MV Staff Eagle of the Month. Congratulations!
Bottom center: Special thanks to Retired Army Colonel Frank Hancock for presenting an engaging lesson to third graders at Shaull Elementary School as part of their CKLA unit on the Ancient Roman Civilization
Bottom right: Lots of Grinchy fun was had in Mrs. Tingley's class at Middlesex Elementary School recently.
Community Connection: Nurse Aid Course at CPACTC
Cumberland Perry Area Career and Technical Center is offering an evening (with a few weekend dates) Certified Nurse Aide course beginning January 29, 2024. This specific program is geared toward adults.
You may click here to learn more about the course, including program dates, fees, and registration information.
Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Sporting Hill Elementary School third graders recently hosted a Lawyer Day to debate whether Julius Caesar was a hero or a traitor. Students dressed as lawyers and stood before their classmates to defend their arguments while showcasing their communication skills and confidence. They are a Portrait of an Eagle.
