Dear La Ballona Families,
October is Bullying Prevention and Disability Awareness Month. Students are learning about the different types of bullying and what they can do to be “upstanders”. They are also learning about the difference between bullying and conflicts or problems. This month’s counseling lesson will review conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. Students will practice “I Messages” and the Peace Process. Parents will also have the opportunity to learn more about bullying prevention and problem-solving skills on Friday, October 4th. We will also celebrate Unity Week on the week of October 14th-18th.
October is Disability Awareness Month as well! It is a time to celebrate the contributions and inclusions of people with disabilities as well as raise awareness of the barriers that still exist. Several activities are planned as students such as read alouds at the library, an assembly, an activity during lunch or information displayed on walls within campuses. Please take a moment to watch the short video above and share with your family more information about understanding disabilities.
Stay PAWSitive!

Arts & Innovation News!
3rd/4th/5th Grade Vocal Music & Choir Update!
Hello La Ballona Lion Families!
Our weekly Vocal/General Music Classes in Grades 3, 4, and 5 are off to a GREAT start! We’ve had a lot of fun so far learning the basics of reading music in preparation for our exciting musical year ahead!
All grades have spent the first few weeks learning and reviewing basic rhythms (quarter notes and rests, pairs of eighth notes, sets of sixteenth notes), especially solidifying the steady beat. We’ve also enjoyed playing Boomwhackers (pitched percussion tubes), in which we had to read the rhythms, melodies, chords, and ostinati to play that correspond to the music.
In addition to the boomwhackers, we have played games and activities such as Pass the Beat Around the Room to honor the silent beats in music (rests) and rely on each other’s musicianship (and concentration) to keep the beat going! We also have transferred rhythmic components to body percussion to Old Town Road.
As you may know, the 3rd Graders will learn to play the recorder and- new this year- the 4th and 5th Graders will learn the ukulele. We will continue to improve upon those music literacy skills when we apply them to the instruments. So “when are the ukuleles/recorders coming?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked that, I would be very rich! Well, the good news is that, through funding provided by the Culver City Education Foundation, all schools will receive the instruments (recorders and ukuleles) and ukulele storage carts very soon! We’re also grateful to an anonymous donor who donated a few extra ukuleles to accommodate our larger class sizes, too!
We aim to begin ukulele lessons in the 4th and 5th Grades in early November after we've built up our musical knowledge, including more rhythmic components and pitch notation. Third graders will be introduced to recorders in early December, and we'll really get going in the new year. In the meantime, we'll focus on enhancing our music literacy skills, particularly in areas like pitch, notation, and staff components. Overall, the students will develop a solid musical foundation that will help ensure a smooth transition when they finally start playing their instruments!
Lastly, our choir, the La Ballona Singing Lions, have begun rehearsals too, and we are thrilled that our choir is nearly 50 students strong! They sound incredible, and we are well on our way to learning our music for our upcoming December performances!
If you have any questions about vocal/general music classes in the upper grades, please email me at erinsmith@ccusd.org. And do be sure to ask your student to demonstrate what they are learning about music when they are at home! Thanks for supporting your child’s music education!
