Greeting Conway Community,
As a Expeditionary Learning school, we value our parents and families as key partners. We look for creative ways to engage our community. It is crucial that we involve our families in the life of the school. This week we hosted several events that did just that. Today our TK family day at lunch picnic was a well attended event that engaged families and students in the life of the school. Thank you to all our families that attended today.
2nd Grade Celebration of Learning
Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work and more than a gathering to share work. These events compel students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public
On Friday, 2nd grade held their Celebration of Learning as a culminating event of their Fossil Expedition. The learners were guided by the following guided questions:
- What do paleontologists do?
- How do characters respond to major events?
- What can we learn from studying fossils?
In this EXPEDITION, students build their literacy and science skills as they engage in a study of fossils. Learners begin this study with a read-aloud of Stone Girl, Bone Girl by Laurence Anholt to explore the guiding questions: "What do paleontologists do?" and "How do characters respond to major events?" Students learn about Mary Anning and her role as a fossil hunter. Students also begin to learn about what fossils are and the work that paleontologists do. Students make a pivot to informational texts and engage more deeply in the study of fossils. Students' learning is centered around the guiding questions: "What can we learn from studying fossils?"
We had a full house at this event and all our learners were able to articulate their learning and share examples of their progress and knowledge they gained.
Thank you to our 2nd grade team, Mrs. Brumback, Mrs. Devlin, Mrs. Vidales, and Mr. Rosales for leading our 2nd grade crew. We are grateful for you and our families that support our students learning.
Pizza with the Principal
Throughout the year, Pizza with the Principal is an event that celebrates our students that demonstrates excellence, perseverance, integrity, and compassion in and out of the classroom. Students are either nominated by their teachers or they are selected from our Cougar Paw hopper where students drop their paws to be selected for weekly prizes or Pizza with the principle.
I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.
We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.
In crew,
Tina Meglich
Principal
