Hamilton Educator Coauthors Book Honoring Legendary Choral Conductor Dennis Shrock
Hamilton Director of Choirs, Vance Acker is the editor and a writer for a book. It is called The Architecture of a Career: a Festschrift in Honor of Dennis Shrock. It is a book commemorating the 80th birthday of Dr. Dennis Shrock, an internationally respected choral conductor/scholar, author, and former professor of our own Mr. Acker. Hamilton High School alum, Skyler Pham who graduated last year did the cover sketch for the book. Way to represent CUSD!
CUSD teachers and coaches play a vital role in shaping the lives of young people. As their students grow and transition into adulthood, educators often have the privilege of witnessing the lasting impact they've made. In the coming months, as we approach the end of the year, we’ll be celebrating our alumni through special spotlights. Dear Coach (Vanis, Sharon),
I hope this message finds you well! It’s been a while, but as I reflect on where I am today, I feel compelled to reach out and express my gratitude for the impact you had on my life—both on and off the court.
During my time as your player, you always saw potential in me that I often couldn’t see in myself. Your belief in me pushed me to grow, not just as an athlete but as a person. Looking back, I realize that the lessons you taught me extended far beyond volleyball. Many of those life lessons didn’t fully sink in until years later, but they’ve shaped who I am today.
I’m excited to share that I recently graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education, and I’ve just started my career as a kindergarten teacher. As I step into this new role, I often think of the dedication and passion you brought to coaching and how it inspired me to pursue my own goals with the same determination.
Thank you for pushing me, believing in me, and teaching me the value of perseverance, hard work, and self-belief.
