Red Wing Public Schools - ISD 256
July 2022
Interim superintendent named
Norton will lead ISD 256 this coming year
The Red Wing School Board unanimously selected Frank Norton as interim superintendent for the 2022-2023 academic year. The 7-0 decision came during a brief special meeting June 28.
"I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve the community of Red Wing," said Mr. Norton, who served as the interim high school principal this past school year.
He and the district are finalizing contract negotiations. The board is expected to act on the contract at a special meeting July 11. Mr. Norton's first day as interim superintendent will be July 12, but in the meantime he will serve as acting superintendent starting July 1.
Voters will be asked to renew operating levy
REFERENDUM SET FOR NOV. 8
Red Wing Public Schools will ask voters to renew the existing operating levy for an additional seven years.
If the referendum passes on Nov. 8, the levy will provide operating funds through the 2030-2031 academic year.
The board considered several factors in voting on Monday, June 20, to hold the renewal referendum on Election Day, Nov. 8, 2022.
- The property tax impact would be flat. This referendum is strictly a request to renew the $1,650 per pupil unit that voters overwhelmingly passed in 2018. (See the property tax calculator button below.)
- A seven-year operating levy would provide local schools with some stability, assist in long-term budgeting and better enable future boards to ensure quality public education. (The state allows voter-approved operating levies up to 10 years, but board members preferred a shorter timespan.)
- The current operating levy goes through 2023, but the board prefers holding a vote during the midterm election. (Three board seats also will be on the ballot.)
Board members noted that renewing or extending the $1,650 per pupil will not resolve all financial challenges.
"Budget cuts will continue to be necessary because of declining enrollment as well as state aid payments not keeping pace with inflation," Business Manager Jackie Paradis said.
Look for more information about the referendum in the coming weeks.
District returns to grade level centers
We remind families that grade configurations will change at every school this fall. All students in a single grade will attend the same school. In March, Red Wing School Board voted to return to grade level centers and adopted the following configurations for the 2022-2023 academic year:
- Sunnyside Elementary --- kindergarten-grade 1
- Burnside Elementary -- grades 2-4
- Twin Bluff Middle School -- grades 5-7
- Red Wing High School -- grades 8-12
- Sunnyside, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Burnside, 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
- Twin Bluff: 8:55 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.
- RWHS: 8:45 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
Note that these times are approximate. The School Board is expected to finalize times once enrollment numbers and busing needs become more clear in August.
Summer food: No food service July 4
Free meal service will be available on weekdays -- with the exception of Independence Day -- to all children this summer. Note that that program is returning to pre-pandemic protocols, so meals must be consumed onsite and eaten in a congregate setting.
All meals will meet nutritional standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
