NMS Family Update
December 2024
Wishing you the Happiest of Holiday Seasons!
Dear Northwood Middle School Families,
As we approach the end of the calendar year, we’re encouraging our students to stay focused and finish 2024 strong! This is an important time to reinforce the values of Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness to Learn, ensuring that they carry these habits into the new year with confidence.
December is also a month for creating lasting memories with family and friends. Amidst the excitement of the season, we hope our students can take pride in their hard work and achievements so far. Let’s encourage them to maintain a balance between academics and enjoying the special moments this time of year brings.
From all of us at Northwood Middle School, we wish you and your family happiness and joy, no matter which holidays you celebrate. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to an even brighter 2025 together!
Warm regards,
Jean Capacetti, Michael Basinski, Elizabeth Andrachik

Thank You for Joining Us for "The Anxious Generation" Event!
Dear Northwood Families,
Thank you to everyone who joined us on November 25th for our evening discussion on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The event was a tremendous success, thanks to the engagement and thoughtfulness of our parent community.
The turnout was less than we would have liked, however parents that did attend were eager to delve into this important topic. During the presentation, the NWMS administrative team summarized Haidt's compelling research on the effects of smartphones and social media on teenagers’ mental health and academic performance. The data resonated with many attendees, sparking insightful questions and discussions.
The second half of the evening was equally impactful as we transitioned into a collaborative conversation. Parents and educators shared personal observations and brainstormed actionable strategies for supporting our children in a world so deeply influenced by digital connectivity. The room buzzed with creative ideas, from setting screen-time boundaries to fostering more face-to-face family interactions.
We are inspired by the commitment and dedication you’ve shown to prioritizing your children's mental and emotional well-being. Your active participation is a testament to the strength of our Northwood community.
For those who couldn’t attend, we will share a summary of the event highlights and some of the strategies discussed. Stay tuned for an email with additional resources, including suggested reading and tips for guiding children toward healthier tech habits.
Thank you for being a part of this meaningful evening. Together, we can continue to support our students in leading balanced, fulfilling lives.
