This week we had visitors from various areas of education attend the poowhiri for myself. It was a great example of how amazing our school is, with all students participating in the ceremony. Our students showed our school values, welcoming our visitors and making them feel at home.

This term we will unfortunately say goodbye to three staff members. Mr Brent Cairns is leaving to be with family, Mrs Melanie Foote is heading off to be a teacher for visually impaired students, and Mr Jamie L’Huillier is moving to Christchurch to be Deputy Principal at Lincoln High School. While we are sad to see these teachers leave, we wish them all the best in their new journeys. We thank them for their contribution to our school and know that Onewhero Area School will always have a place in their hearts.

As we move into the wet and colder months, I would like to remind students about the process for uniform passes. Students need to bring a note to explain why they need a uniform pass. If students are feeling cold, they are welcome to wear a dark blue or black long sleeve t-shirts under their polo or a white long sleeve t-shirt under the white shirts. Black stockings can also be worn with the skirts.

Greetings to us all. To all dignitaries, visitors, families and community, welcome to Onewhero Area School for this special occasion regarding Rebecca our new Tumuaki.

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the amazing performance by our students – you should all be incredibly proud with the way you represent yourselves and our school - thank you.

As a board, entering into the recruitment process we were mindful that this decision was an incredibly important one, which will shape the future our school and students for years to come. I can with the upmost confidence say that Rebecca is the absolute right choice for this role. She impressed us with her clear vision, passion for student wellbeing, achievement, and genuine drive to make Onewhero Area School the School of choice for ALL of our families. Those that know Rebecca can attest to the fact she is firm, yet fair, willing to roll her sleeves up and get stuck in, and unwaveringly student centric. In my recent discussions with the ministry and local community members (and to the best of my knowledge) Rebecca is one of three women Principals, and without giving her age away, the youngest our school has had in its over 125-year history. This is an exceptional achievement and one that Rebecca should be incredibly proud of.

Rebecca started her teaching career at Fairburn School as a year 5/6 teacher, before heading to Te Mahia School where she taught a combined year 3/4/5 class for over 3 years. She then returned to Fairburn School before joining OAS in 2013 as a classroom teacher in the junior school. Her talent and leadership skills were quickly identified and recognised when Rebecca was promoted to a year 5/6 syndicate leader role in 2014. In 2017 she took a sabbatical and worked as a Mentor for Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities for Massey University where she worked with management teams in many schools, supporting them to implement change. In 2018 Rebecca’s vision, effective leadership, and relationship building were stand out qualities that contributed in her being successful in securing the Deputy Principal of Student Achievement for the school. In her time at OAS Rebecca has been an active participant of change and improvement for our school, leading professional learning groups and initiatives like DMIC (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities), assessment and the Maori Education Plan.

The Board view our biggest and most important stakeholders as our students, and I thought it only fitting that we got some on the ground feedback around this important decision. I want to share with you now some of the responses we have received from our students around this appointment.

1. "Mrs Bills will be an amazing Principal as she is a good leader, is involved with the students and willing to get things done. She stands her ground when the situation calls for it.
2. Mrs Bills makes the school a really positive place, and we love seeing her walk around and talk to us. She is very interested in what we do.
3. Mrs Bills is involved with students, and it’s really cool how she has worked her way up from being a teacher, all the way up to being our Principal. She has shown us what hard work can do".

I know Rebecca enjoyed receiving cards from our classes and of note was a beautiful congratulatory poster for her wall from Room 4 who are a year 1 & 2 class. The students took a lot of time and effort to highlight in great detail her amazing collection of shoes and earrings – something she is well known for around the school.

It was great to receive all of this feedback, and as you see Rebecca is committed to ensuring our school succeeds and building strong relationships with staff, students, whanau and community. She has a clear vision for us, a deep passion for our school and I have no doubt that Onewhero Area School will continue to grow and prosper under her leadership.

All funds received through the scheme this year will be put towards the school’s Shade and Shelter project currently being worked on. Thank you John Andrew Ford for supporting our school in this way.

As you are probably aware the Banks are in the process of exiting cheques from the Banking system. We have been notified by ANZ, that they will no longer accept cheques as of 31st May 2021. Therefore, as a School, we are no longer able to accept cheques as a payment option. We accept Eftpos and Cash at the School Office, with Internet Banking being our preferred method of payment. The students in Integrated Studies are currently working on a Life skill and Careers Unit. As part of their learning about Life skills we ran a workshop for them during the lesson on Monday. For these they were working in groups and had to complete a range of activities including;

• Tying a tie
• Changing a bayonet and screw in light bulb
• Ironing a napkin
• Folding washing (the fitted sheet was a challenge!)
• Filling in a formal form with a mock IRD number, bank account etc.
• Addressing and placing a stamp on an envelope
• Screwing a hook onto a board
• Learning how to do a proper handshake

Here are some photo’s from the lesson, it was really fun and it was interesting to see what the students found challenging, especially tying a tie and addressing an envelope! Thanks to Annika and Pam for helping out!!

Road Safety Education Program

Year 11-13 students have the opportunity to attend a one day RYDA Road Safety Education Program on Tuesday 18th May. The program, specifically designed for this age group, aims to increase an understanding of road safety issues including risk factors, educate students about rights and responsibilities on the road and equip them with the tools they need to choose behaviors that lead to safer outcomes on NZ roads. NB: Students do not need to have their licence to take part in the program; the course does not teach technical driving skills.

The cost of the program is fully subsidized by Rotary Clubs, co-founding sponsors BOC and NZ Steel, and major partner Bridgestone, and the Onewhero Area School STAR programme. We also thank COGS Waikato West and Trust Waikato for supporting the program.

Permission letters will be sent home this week. Please discuss this opportunity with your teenager. This is an awesome opportunity for them to gain valuable information and knowledge through an award winning program.
